This showbiz mogul started with "K" shows on TV and they became a staple in every household. She changed the face of TV in no time. Characters like Tulsi, Parvati, Sujal and Mr. Kapoor had become the loves of our lives. However, as the times changed, Ekta also evolved with the growing times and further ventured into backing movies and shows which were a complete opposite to the ideal bahu kind of characters. It is not like she stopped churning out the cliche, but she balanced it out with the quirky and we saw a woman with many sides and hell we are loving it!
From Hum Paanch to Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, Kahaani Ghar Ghar Ki to Lipstick Under My Burkha, The Dirty Picture and now with ALTBalaji, she has proven the fact that she is here to rule the entertainment industry and be an inspiration to many. Let's take a look at the different side of Ekta with a few movies and shows that stand out and you have to watch!
Lipstick Under My Burkha
She got on board as the presenter and distributor of the controversial film and left no stone unturned to promote the film. In a lot of interviews to different media houses, she expressed how the film convinced her to be on board. Besides, the content, the star cast of the Alankrita Shrivastava directorial was epic! It features Ratna Pathak Shah, Konkona Sen Sharma, Aahana Kumra, Plabita Borthakur, Sushant Singh and Vikrant Massey.
Ekta told media: "I wanted to do it! I saw the film, I liked it. I didn’t think I would like it so much. I’m not much of a torchbearer for art films. So maybe I have not given them a chance. But mostly I have seen movies that are pretentious, they lack entertainment. But when I saw this movie, it was after a long time that I came across a very bold but very strangely questioning film. It was entertaining and very exclusive. At any point, you never felt as if these were people you never knew. You would always feel a part of the movie.”
The film was rejected by many and Ekta shared that she is clueless why they did! She said: “To stand and look at a film like this and not be a part of it would have been an extremely sad part if you are a studio head."
The movie was not even given a certificate from the CBFC for being too ‘lady oriented’. The makers approached the Film Certification Appellate Tribunal (FCAT), which directed the CBFC to certify the film with few cuts. After the film was cleared for release, Ekta's team came up with an edgy poster of the film, which depicts a woman showing her middle finger.
She told a media house: "I thought, will this be an 'artie' movie that 200 people will watch or a film where I'll get more and more women to see it? So, we got a sassy promo out, edgy as hell with great Hindi 'masala' music and have more women pay attention to it. I felt this was the way to go forward."
As someone who has produced shows on TV before venturing into cinema, Ekta understands the duality of the audiences in India. " 'Hamare khaane ke daant aur, dikhane ke daant aur hain'. What I say in front of my parents, I won't repeat the same with my friends. And we are okay with it."
"This is our society, this is how we've been brought up. But it doesn't mean I don't like discussing such topics. It means I will take up these issues in a different medium at the right time." Ekta said lipstick, as a symbol, was more about freedom of choice.
Romil & Jugal
