Eid-ul-Fitr, also referred to as Eid-al-Fitr, Meethi Eid, or Id-al-Fitr, Eid Mubarak signifies the conclusion of Ramadan, the Islamic month of fasting. Celebrated over the first three days of Shawwal, the 10th month of the Hijri calendar, it holds cultural significance across South Asian nations like India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. The term "Chaand Raat," originating from Urdu, symbolises the eve of Eid-ul-Fitr or Eid al-Adha, where ‘chand’ signifies the moon and ‘raat’ denotes night, representing the night when the moon is observed. This occasion holds importance for Muslims as it marks the conclusion of Ramadan, Zul-Hijjah, and the commencement of Shawwal. It serves as a reminder of the values of compassion, self-discipline, and charity instilled during the month of Ramadan, fostering unity and goodwill among believers.
In India, the occurrence of Eid-ul-Fitr 2024 depends upon the sighting of the Shawwal moon. Anticipatedly, the crescent moon is forecasted to be observable on the evening of April 9, 2024. Should the moon be sighted on this day, Eid will be commemorated on April 10, 2024; conversely, if not, the festival will be observed on April 11, 2024.
Eid-ul-Fitr's date varies annually due to the Islamic calendar's lunar nature, contrasting with the solar-based Gregorian calendar. Consequently, Eid-ul-Fitr's date in India shifts about 10 to 11 days earlier each year. This adjustment hinges on sighting the Shawwal moon, symbolising the end of Ramadan and the onset of Eid-ul-Fitr festivities.
Saudi Arabia, the custodian of Islam's most revered sites, declared on Monday that the festival of Eid al-Fitr, signifying the conclusion of the Ramadan fast, will commence on Wednesday. The announcement was made by the Supreme Court, stating that Tuesday will be the final day of Ramadan and Wednesday will mark the advent of Eid al-Fitr, as reported by the official Saudi Press Agency on its X account.

If Muslims across various countries in the Middle East and the West spot the Shawwal crescent moon on April 8 evening, following the Ramadan fast's breaking at maghrib or evening prayers, chand raat will occur on Monday, April 8. Consequently, Eid-ul-Fitr will be celebrated the next day, i.e., on April 9, 2024. However, if the Shawwal crescent is not sighted on Monday evening, chand raat will be on Tuesday, April 9, and Eid-ul-Fitr will be observed on Wednesday, April 10, 2024. This scenario implies the potential for Muslims to observe a 30-day fast during Ramadan instead of the typical 29 days.
Indeed, the sighting of the Eid moon is a moment of joy, togetherness, and introspection. It's a time when communities come together, strengthening bonds and sharing in spiritual connection. This occasion underscores the significance of tradition and the need to uphold Islamic practises, reminding individuals of their cultural heritage and values.
