Delhi Heatwave Warning: Safety Tips As Temperature Surpasses 47 Degrees Celsius

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for the next five days until May 23, 2024, in Delhi and its surrounding areas, as temperatures surpassed 47 degrees Celsius in many parts of the National Capital Region (NCR) recently. The IMD has emphasised the need for 'extreme caution for vulnerable individuals' due to the ongoing heatwave in its seven-day forecast. The intense heat has resulted in the highest peak power demand for May in the city, prompting the Delhi government to instruct schools that have not already begun summer vacations to do so immediately. Heatwave In Delhi And Other States

Residents of Delhi, already enduring a severe heatwave for the past few weeks, were taken aback by reports from the weather department indicating temperatures soaring as high as 52.9 degrees Celsius in certain areas of the national capital. However, both the weather department and Union Minister Kiren Rijiju have urged caution, stating that these readings warrant careful examination as they may be influenced by errors or local factors.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) clarified that while maximum temperatures in Delhi NCR ranged from 45.2° to 49.1°C across different areas, Mungeshpur reported an unusually high temperature of 52.9°C, which could potentially be attributed to sensor malfunction or localized conditions. Minister Rijiju echoed these sentiments, highlighting the improbability of such extreme temperatures at a single station and assuring that officials would thoroughly investigate the matter.

The Education Department in Delhi has issued a circular instructing all schools to observe summer vacation from May 11 to June 30, 2024 due to the prevailing heatwave conditions. The intense heat poses significant challenges, especially for low-income families with limited access to water and cooling facilities. Additionally, it's putting strain on individuals who need to venture outdoors for work and other activities. 

Delhi, along with neighbouring states like Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, will hold elections on Saturday, May 25, 2024 as part of the penultimate phase of a seven-phase general election. Besides Delhi, regions such as Punjab, Chandigarh, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh are also predicted to experience heatwave conditions until May 26, 2024. There's little relief expected until next week.

The risk of heat-related illnesses, including heat stroke, is markedly elevated for individuals of all age groups. This poses a substantial health risk, particularly for vulnerable populations such as infants, the elderly, and those with chronic health conditions.

The IMD advised the public to minimise exposure to high temperatures and to prioritise staying cool. They also emphasised the importance of preventing dehydration by maintaining adequate fluid intake.

Safety Tips During Heatwave

To minimise the impact of heatwaves, The National Disaster Management Authority recommends the following measures:

• Limit outdoor activities, especially between 12:00 noon and 3:00 p.m., when the sun's intensity is at its peak.
• Stay hydrated by drinking water regularly, even if you don't feel thirsty.
• Opt for lightweight, light-coloured, loose-fitting cotton clothing. Utilise protective gear like goggles, umbrellas, hats, and appropriate footwear when venturing out in the sun.
• Avoid strenuous physical exertion during peak daytime temperatures. Refrain from outdoor work between 12 noon and 3 p.m.
• Carry water with you while travelling to ensure hydration.
• Steer clear of alcohol, tea, coffee, and carbonated beverages, as they can contribute to dehydration.
• If working outdoors, use headgear like a hat or umbrella and keep a damp cloth handy to cool down your head, neck, face, and limbs.
• Never leave children or pets unattended in parked vehicles, as temperatures inside can escalate dangerously.
• Seek medical attention promptly if you experience faintness or illness due to heat.
• Rehydrate your body with ORS (Oral Rehydration Solution) or homemade drinks like lassi, torani, lemon water, or buttermilk.
• Ensure animals have access to shade and plenty of water.
• Keep your home cool by using curtains, shutters, or sunshades during the day and opening windows at night.
• Employ fans, damp cloths, and frequent cold-water baths to stay cool.
