Chelsi Smith was the first woman from the United States who won the Miss Universe title in 15 years. She was crowned in 1995 by Former Indian Miss Universe and actress Sushmita Sen.
Smith lost her battle to liver cancer after a long time.
Sushmita offered her condolences on Twitter, with a throwback picture, saying '“I loved her smile and that generous spirit!!! Rest in peace my beautiful friend Chelsi Smith Miss Universe 1995. Dugga Dugga'.

Shanna Moakler who was the runner-up to Smith in the 1995 Miss USA Pageant mourned her death and tweeted: 'I am heartbroken. Godspeed beautiful. You were my friend and a light. I love and will miss you more then you will ever know. The epitome of a Queen.
'Tonight I will be playing poker for @CancerFreeGen in honour of my dear friend Chelsi_Smith who I lost today to cancer. I am heartbroken. Godspeed beautiful. You were my friend and a light. I love and will miss you more then you will never know. The epitome of a Queen,' she added.
