Why Is Long Sindoor Applied?

“In the context of Chhath Puja, applying a long line of sindoor (vermillion) from the nose to the forehead holds deep cultural and spiritual significance, especially for married women. Sindoor itself is traditionally worn by Hindu married women as a symbol of marital status and a blessing for their husband’s longevity and well-being,” said Pandit Devvarsh.

During Chhath Puja, the practice is even more pronounced, as this festival involves prayers for family prosperity, health, and marital harmony. Extending the sindoor from the nose to the forehead is seen as a gesture of profound reverence and devotion, not only to one’s husband but also to the divine forces being worshipped, particularly the Sun God (Surya) and Chhathi Maiya, who are believed to bestow blessings of health, happiness, and family welfare.

Chhath Puja 2024: Long Sindoor Connects The Third Eye

“The elongated sindoor signifies an abundance of blessings and a longer life for the husband and family members. Symbolically, this act connects the third eye (associated with wisdom and spiritual insight) with the base of the forehead, representing a bond of faith and dedication. During Chhath Puja, it is believed that the longer the sindoor, the stronger the blessing and protection for the family. This ritual, therefore, reflects a deep-rooted belief in love, protection, and spiritual connection within Hindu tradition,” said Pandit Ji.
