It took a century for the establishment of the women’s legal right to vote in United States of America way back in the 20s while India granted equal voting rights to men and women right after its independence. But when it came to the representation of women in the parliament, it remains an abysmal figure even today. Even if women are voted to certain positions, it is the men in the family who take the real decisions, making the women puppets in the great play of democracy. It was a concern about such issues which was behind the formation of the National Women’s Party – an all women’s party, a party of women, by women and for women.
What’s The Aim Of National Women’s Party?
Described as the Party Of Mothers, the NWP has been formed to fight for 50% reservation for women in the parliament and other areas. The idea is to remove gender disparity in the political arena while creating a better environment for development of women. The National Women’s Party also plans to open a Youth Parliament to educate women from every state in India about the political process in academic and practical terms to that they become more involved in it. Launching a mobile app named Mahila Rakshak is also in the pipeline to provide help to women in distress. The party will fight for 283 out of total 545 seats in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

Who’s The Person Behind The National Women’s Party?
The NWP is being spearheaded by doctor and social activist Swetha Shetty who’s also the head of an NGO in Telangana. The party has the support of the Telangana Mahila Samiti which boasts of 1.45 lakh women members. The foundations of the party were laid sometime in 2012 and now they have also applied for registration with the Election Commission. The party has asked for support from men and women alike.
In a country like India where the sex ratio is still skewed, female infanticide is common and the safety of women is not guaranteed under many conditions, the formation of an all women’s party is a welcome change. HerZindagi salutes this change and will strive to be a brand that’s there to educate women on their rights, give them expert legal advice and inform them about the best financial advice to always keep them updated.
