5 Simple Ways to Clean Your AC Filter at Home and Boost Cooling Instantly

Simple Ways to Clean an AC Filter at Home

Cleaning your AC filter is cost-effective, improves energy efficiency, extends lifespan, and, most importantly, is very simple.

Vacuum with a Soft Brush Attachment

• Attach a soft brush tool to your vacuum hose, avoiding damage to the delicate mesh.

• Run the brush gently across the dusty side by laying the filter on a flat surface.

• To pull out any residual particles, gently flip the filter and vacuum back.

Warm Water and Mild Dish Soap Wash

• To remove sticky grime and kitchen grease, pour lukewarm water through the filter from the clean side to the dirty side.

• Prepare a bucket full of warm water by adding a few drops of mild dish soap, and soak the filter for 15 minutes.

• Use a soft cloth to remove any stubborn spots.

• Air-dry the filter before installing it back into the ac.

White Vinegar and Water Solution

• Make a solution of water and white vinegar in equal proportions in a large tub.

• Soak the filter for 30-60 minutes in case of musty mold. The acidity of the white vinegar will kill bacteria and mold.

• Rinse with fresh water to remove the vinegar smell.

• Ensure to air-dry properly before installing back into the ac.

Outdoor Garden Hose Spray

• For large central AC filters, lean the filter against a wall or pole outside your home.

• Use a garden hose on a low-pressure setting, avoiding any damage to the filter.

• Make sure the water stream starts from the clean side of the filter to the dirty side to take out the debris.

Baking Soda Paste for Deep Cleaning

• To remove tough odours, mix one tbsp of baking soda with a small amount of water until it reaches a toothpaste-like consistency.

• Put the paste over mold areas with heavy odours and let it sit for around 10 minutes.

• Next, gently rub it off with a soft-bristle brush in circular motions to remove the yellow stains.

• Rinse thoroughly with warm water to remove the dirt.

• Air-dry completely to avoid future mold growth or motor damage.
