For those with lactose intolerance or those looking to explore dairy-free baking, a lactose-free chocolate cake is a delightful option. This cake retains the rich, chocolatey flavour you love but skips dairy ingredients like milk or butter, replacing them with lactose-free or plant-based alternatives. It’s perfect for birthdays, celebrations, or just satisfying a sweet tooth. With simple ingredients and minimal effort, you can whip up a delicious cake that everyone will enjoy.

What Is A Lactose-Free Chocolate Cake?

A lactose-free chocolate cake is made without any ingredients containing lactose, a sugar found in dairy products. Instead of regular milk, butter, or cream, this cake uses substitutes like almond milk, soy milk, coconut milk, or lactose-free milk. These swaps ensure the cake is just as moist, fluffy, and rich as a traditional chocolate cake. Whether you’re lactose intolerant or looking for a healthier twist, this cake is a guilt-free indulgence.

Easy 5-Step Lactose-Free Chocolate Cake Recipe

Follow this easy step-by-step guide to bake this easy lactose-free chocolate cake in just five steps:

  • Step 1: Preheat your oven to 175°C (350°F). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans or line them with parchment paper for easy removal.
  • Step 2: In a large mixing bowl, sift together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Whisk to combine.
  • Step 3: Add eggs (or egg substitute), lactose-free milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract to the dry mixture. Beat the batter until smooth and well combined.
  • Step 4: Gradually pour in the boiling water while mixing at low speed. The batter will be thin, but this ensures a moist and tender cake.
  • Step 5: Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans and bake for 30–35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the centre comes out clean.  Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

You can top it with lactose-free frosting or a dusting of powdered sugar, and enjoy your homemade lactose-free chocolate cake!

This recipe is proof that dietary restrictions don’t mean compromising on taste.
