James Cameron’s much-anticipated ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ has finally hit cinemas, and while the film's visual grandeur is undeniable, early reactions on Twitter paint a picture of a film that has divided audiences. Following the first screenings, fans and critics alike took to social media to share their thoughts. While some are captivated by the cinematic spectacle, others have found the film’s storyline a bit lacking.
The film’s visuals have garnered widespread praise, with many users highlighting the breathtaking 3D effects and the immersive world-building that ‘Avatar’ is known for. “#AvatarFireAndAsh is a cinematic experience,” wrote user @am_Migrade, adding, “Story-wise flat but the 3D visuals are absolutely worth experiencing on the big screen.” It's clear that for many, the visual feast alone makes the film a must-see in cinemas, especially for fans of the ‘Avatar’ franchise.

Similarly, @jiyathedon shared, “#AvatarFireandAsh A visual wonder, through and through. The sense of awe never dips, not even for a moment till the end. The film takes its time with the setup, but the final showdown more than rewards all that world-building.”

However, while the film's visual appeal is universally lauded, its narrative has proven to be more divisive. Critics have pointed out that the storyline feels repetitive, echoing elements from its predecessors. @theFLICKpick remarked, “#AvatarFireAndAsh is a visually stunning spectacle, BUT half the movie felt like a filler, copy-paste retread of the first two movies with questionable character decisions. The other half was genuinely compelling and continued the story.”

Some have even questioned the film’s pacing and emotional depth. @Mark_Hobin noted, “AVATAR: FIRE AND ASH looks extraordinary. Director James Cameron is a supreme visual architect, and 3D is essential. The story, on the other hand, feels like it was written by a child who just learned how to write and eagerly did so for the first time.”

Despite the criticisms, many fans still found themselves enamoured by the film’s sheer scale and spectacle. @RodneyAdmitOne said, “Just saw ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ and in true James Cameron fashion, he never disappoints in making sure you feel like you’re immersed in a blockbuster. I thought the plot was a bit weaker compared to ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ but the battle scene was absolutely incredible, especially in IMAX 3D.”

It seems that ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ is a film of two halves: visually stunning but narratively underwhelming for some. As @Gabofrfr put it, “#AvatarFireAndAsh is the reason why go to cinema should never die because this film is something worth seeing on the big screen! It has EPIC action scenes, emotional moments, visually impossible to see anything more beautiful than this and narratively, it improves greatly! 4.5/5.”

‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ isn't just making waves for its mixed reviews, it's also getting attention for its sheer scale and ambition. The film brings back much of the beloved cast from The Way of Water, including Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Kate Winslet, and Cliff Curtis, all reprising their iconic roles. But the world of Pandora is expanding, with new faces like Oona Chaplin and David Thewlis joining the cast, injecting fresh energy into the story and further building on the vast universe Cameron has created.

Filmed in New Zealand alongside The Way of Water, the production began in 2017 and wrapped up in 2020.
