2015 was a great year for Bollywood, with several films released in the year becoming cult favourites. From Tamasha to Baahubali, most of these still make pop culture appearances and are referred to in many contexts. Most also don’t feel like they were released ten years ago.

As these films hit their 10-year mark, here’s a nostalgic look back at what made them so unforgettable.

Bajrangi Bhaijaan

Salman Khan shone in this film that had equal parts emotions and masala. He plays a man helping a lost Pakistani girl return home, and it melted hearts across borders. It remains one of Bollywood’s most emotional yet massy films.3 (24)

It had songs, dancing, fighting and tugged at heartstrings, making it a popular choice.

Tamasha

Imtiaz Ali’s drama with Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone in the leads, explored themes like identity and love.1 (52)

It received mixed reviews initially, but has stood the test of time to remain a favourite among cine-lovers. A cult classic now, it stood out for the soulful performances and unusual themes it explored.

The songs continue to get traction, especially on reels on Instagram.

Baahubali: The Beginning

The genre-defining magnum opus, Baahubali: The Beginning by S.S. Rajamouli stunned audiences because of it’s scale of production and magnanimity. The phrase “Katappa ne Baahubali ko kyun maara?” soon became a nationwide obsession.2 (43)

The epic fantasy genre in Indian cinema was forever changed, and Baahubali remains one of the most iconic movies ever made in it.

Drishyam

This thriller starring Ajay Devgn in the lead, showed how far a common man can go to protect his family.

Its highlights were its layered storytelling and gripping climax, which made it an instant classic.

Dilwale

This movie marked the reunion of two of Bollywood’s most loved – Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol. While the movie received mixed reviews, the duo managed to get fans back to theatres.

Songs like Gerua helped keep the nostalgia alive.

Piku

Deepika Padukone and Amitabh Bachchan helmed this beautiful film, laden with heartwarming scenes, and soulful melodies. The theme of a daughter adjusting to the ways of her ageing father was captured with nuance.

Shoojit Sircar’s slice-of-life story touched hearts due to it’s simplicity, and honest storytelling. Irrfan Khan was an instant audience favourite.

It’s depiction of Kolkata is revisited even today.
