House Of The Dragon Season 3 Episode 1 Recap: After a two-year wait, 'House of the Dragon’ is back, and it has absolutely no interest in easing you in gently. Season three, episode one, titled ‘Salt and Sea, Blood and Fire’, features the long-awaited Battle of the Gullet, the emergence of a new dragonrider, and a heartbreaking loss for Team Black.
The episode concludes with tragedy as Jacaerys and his dragon Vermax are brought down during the battle, dealing a severe blow to Rhaenyra's cause. Meanwhile, political tensions continue to grow in King's Landing, where Alicent attempts to influence Aemond Targaryen as the war enters a new and increasingly dangerous phase. Why Does Jacaerys Lock Rhaenyra In Her Chambers?
The episode sets its emotional stakes early, and the tension between mother and son is at the centre of all of it. At Dragonstone, Baela gets the news that the blockade is being attacked by the Triarchy and Lannisters.
She tells Rhaenyra, and the queen goes into battle mode. Jace, who is not feeling his mother's plans, makes Ser Lorent lock Rhaenyra in her chambers so she will not join the battle. Instead, Jace and Baela hop on their dragons, Vermax and Moondancer, and go to support Corlys' forces.
It is an act of love dressed up as insubordination, and it ends up costing him everything.

What Happens To Rhaena And Sheepstealer At The Battle Of The Gullet?
One of the episode's biggest victories belongs to Rhaena Targaryen. After spending much of the previous season searching for a dragon of her own, Rhaena finally succeeds in bonding with the wild dragon Sheepstealer, a long-awaited moment that significantly strengthens Team Black's dragon advantage.
On the battlefield, that victory curdles fast. Rhaena did not have a handle on Sheepstealer. As soon as he was attacked a few times, he lost sense of which ships belonged to the Blacks and which belonged to the Greens, and started burning anyone in his eyeline. Rhaena tried her best to control the beast, but it was pointless. It is Sheepstealer's chaos that ultimately seals Jace's fate.
How Do Jacaerys And Vermax Die In Episode 1?
Jacaerys directed Vermax toward Rhaena and Sheepstealer to intervene, and ended up getting pursued by Sheepstealer himself. All of this echoed Lucerys' death, where he and Arrax were killed by an out-of-control Vhagar, just as Jacaerys and Vermax were steered into danger by an out-of-control Sheepstealer.
Jace orders Vermax to pull back at the last moment, sparing Rhaena and Sheepstealer from a deadly strike. However, his focus on the third dragon leaves him completely exposed. Vermax is successfully pulled into the water by a grapnel, and while Jace frees himself from the dragon's saddle, he is shot and killed in the water. Three Triarchy arrows find him the moment he breaks the surface. And with that, the battle is over, and so is the episode.

What Does Jacaerys's Death Mean For Rhaenyra's Cause?
The loss is not just personal. It is strategic, dynastic, and devastating. Rhaenyra loses her heir. Team Black loses one of its most trusted voices. Jace represented the possibility of a better future. While many characters have become consumed by vengeance and ambition, Jace frequently approached problems with patience, diplomacy, and reason.
Without him, the road ahead becomes far darker. Thanks to Jace, Baela, and Corlys' skill at sea, the Blacks technically claim victory at the Gullet. Still, it is not a happy ending. The eight-episode season airs weekly on Sundays on HBO, with the season finale scheduled for August 9, 2026.
