Have people lost their ability to stay idle or be bored? Are you also the one who avoid staying idle and do nothing? If yes, you are not alone. There is an interesting change happening, especially among the younger generation, where people have trained their brains to expect constant inputs. Know all about this new phenomenon and what science says about it.
When Brain Sees Boredom As Threat:
According to Psychology Today, Boredom may occur when our energy isn’t channeled into an outlet that provides meaning or fulfillment. It can act as a catalyst for change and an opportunity for reflection. Hence, it may occur during a task when you do not feel challenged, or everything seems repetitive.
What is Default Mode Network?
When an individual is sitting idle, the Default Mode Network gets activated. It is best known for being active when a person is not focused on the outside world and the brain is at wakeful rest, such as during daydreaming and mind-wandering. Although the DMN is useful, it can also bring up uncomfortable thoughts and self-criticism.

Interesting Experiments On Boredom:
Some interesting experiments and research have been done to see how people will act when left alone with their thoughts. At the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, social psychologist Timothy Wilson recruited hundreds of undergraduate student volunteers and community members to take part in thinking periods.
According to the website Science, participants were left alone in a lab room in one of the experiments, where they could push a button and shock themselves if they wanted to. The result shocked them, quite literally, as 67% of men and 25% of women chose to inflict it on themselves rather than just sit there quietly and think.
Dropping Attention Span:
According to the American Psychological Association, the average attention span on a single screen task have dropped from 2.5 minutes to roughly 47 seconds over the past two decades. Short-term media like Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts, and constant notifications on devices are the major factors causing this. These apps reward fast scrolling with quick hits of dopamine and prevent the brain from resting as well.
The dropping attention span has a direct link to an intolerance for boredom, as our brain constantly seek rapid-fire stimulation.
