Who Is María Corina Machado? Venezuelan Leader Wins The 2025 Nobel Peace Prize

After leading the struggle for democracy in her country peacefully, María Corina Machado is now being recognised for her work globally. Machado has been presented with the Nobel Peace Prize 2025 award today in Norway. She has been presented with this accolade for her tireless work promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela. The award was given to her by ‘The Norwegian Nobel Committee’ for her struggle to fight for democratic rights. With her fight, she has been able to keep the spirit of democracy alive even amidst the challenges Venezuela keeps facing. Who Is María Corina Machado?

She is a Venezuelan Leader who works to ensure that democracy thrives in her country despite the growing challenges her nation goes through. Machado leads the Vente Venezuela opposition party. In 2017, she also helped found the Soy Venezuela alliance. This alliance helps in uniting the pro-democracy forces in the country across political dividing lines.

María Corina Machado Career

The Venezuelan Leader had announced that she will be running for president in the 2024 presidential election. Unfortunately, Machado was blocked from running for president. She did not let this challenge stop her. Machado then decided to support the opposition’s alternative candidate, Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia. The opposition group mobilised widely and collected systematic documentation. From the data collected, they became the true winner of the election. They declared their victory and went on to rule. 

For the past year, Machado was forced to live in hiding from the public eye. Nobel chairman Jørgen Watne Frydnes talked about the reason behind her win, saying, “her struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy". 

María Corina Machado Life 

Born in Venezuela in 1967, Machado comes from an engineering background. She holds an industrial engineering degree from Universidad Católica Andrés Bello and a finance specialisation from IESA. Before entering the world of politics, she worked in business.
