The Nobel Peace Prize of 2023 has been awarded to Nargis Mohammadi, an Iranian activist for fighting against the oppression of women in Iran. She fought for equal rights and freedom for women. After receiving this award Nargis became the second Iranian woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize after human rights activist Shirin Ebadi. Amidst the rage of the Nobel Peace Prize, here are the five things that you should know about her.
Nargis Mohammadi was born in Zanjan, Iran. She is an engineer by profession but during her university days, she used to write articles on women's rights which eventually led to her arrest. After that, she went to work as a journalist where she advocated and supported women’s rights and published a book titled ‘The Reforms, the Strategy and the Tactics’. She joined the Defenders of Human Rights Center in 2003 and later became the Vice president of the organisation.
Nargis Mohammadi's continued criticism towards the Iranian government (about basuri swaraj) which suppressed women's rights has led her to prison multiple times. But she continued to advocate for equal rights for all even when in prison. Recently she has been behind bars because of the protests over the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in police custody. Yet she contributed an opinion piece for the New York Times.

Nargis got married to pro-reform journalist Taghi Rahmani in 1999. Later on, he moved to France in 2012 after serving 14 years in prison sentences. Nargis and Rehmani together have twin children.

Nargis has received several awards (hz womenprenuer award) for her exemplary work in the field of human rights and women. She has received the Alexander Langer Award in 2009, Per Anger Prize in 2011, the Weimar Human Rights Award in 2016 and many more. She was also recognised as one of BBC’s 100 inspiring and influential women in 2022.

Nargis Mohammadi has sacrificed a lot for women’s rights in Iran. She was arrested 13 times, convicted 5 times and sentenced to a total of 31 years in jail and 154 lashes.
