“I wanted to build something bigger than me,” is how Parul Gulati, Founder of Nish Hair, developed a brand that got business tycoons from Shark Tank India Season-2 to invest in it.

Gulati is an actor and has worked in Hindi and Punjabi film and television industries. She is famous for her work in Girls Hostel, Haq Se, P.O.W. - Bandi Yuddh Ke, Illegal - Justice Out of Order, and Your Honor among others.

In our recent Instagram live session for HZ Women of the Month, Gulati shared her journey from an actor to an entrepreneur and building something that has her name on it.

Every Actor Is Knows How To Sell

Speaking about her journey from acting to starting Nish Hair, Gulati said, “Every actor knows how to sell.” She added that as soon as the person chooses this profession, they start developing selling skills.

Gulati believes that every actor has enterprising skills because they have an uncertain life and have to sell their skills to directors and audiences. She started Nish Hair with the desire to build a brand. “I wanted to build something bigger than me.”

Soon she realised that Nish Hair was more than just her dream. It was a solution to problems several people face every day. The brand creates wigs made of human hair, making them appear original with easy-attach and detach options.

She shared that the unique selling point of her brand was that the Indian market did not have many options before. “Either the actors were using hair extensions or people suffering from cancer used wigs. There was nothing for day-to-day use,” she shared.

Gulati’s vision with Nish Hair is the usage of human hair extensions as a replacement for hair treatments. “It is like makeup, " she said, “You have to use makeup if you have pigmented skin or dark spots.” Similarly, a person can use extensions when they want coloured streaks or smooth straight hair.

She said that treatments last only for a definite period and leave your hair dull and lifeless. However, with extensions, your purpose is also fulfilled and your locks remain healthy, natural and shiny.

Nish Hair Solving Hair Woes

Sharing her experience, Gulati said that extensions help women to solve woes like receding hairline, and hair loss (Hair Fall Due To Stress) and hide bald patches. Initially, people used to cover with a veil or use black powder to cover patches and make looks look fuller and bouncy.

However, with human hair extensions, they can solve their problems in a minute. She said though her products are expensive, they last longer and are comparatively cheaper than cosmetic and beauty treatments. She added that Nish Hair has opened a one-of-a-kind hair studio in India. She shared that one of the sweetest things she feels is homemakers saving up money to buy her products that can help them regain confidence. She has had many young and old women suffering from Alopecia, a medical term referring to patchy baldness. Gulati sees the success of her brand in her customers.

‘Started Business From My Living Room’

Gulati knew she wanted to start her business and had no idea how to create these human hair extensions. She shared that India is one of the biggest places, where people donate their locks. “India is Mecca for human hair (Neem Hair Masks),” she said.

The actor built her brand from her living room where she and her mother started sewing pieces together. “I wanted to keep the best hair in India and provide women with the best extensions,” Gulati added.

She initially sourced hair from Triputi Balaji, Andhra Pradesh. The first few patches were bad, but Gulati remained persistent. As soon as she started selling extensions, her customers guided her. They shared their requirements and the entrepreneur worked towards solving their problems. Currently, she is working towards building extensions for men.

Much like human hair, extensions also require an equal amount of care. Here are a few dos and don’ts,

  • You have to wash them post 10-15 uses and avoid frequent washing
  • Do not swim with extensions, as chlorine can cause severe damage
  • Use the right shampoo and conditioner
  • Do not oil hair extensions, it will not improve their quality
  • Do not sleep with extensions

If you maintain it well, an extension can last for a decade and even more.

Soon, we will be seeing Gulati in two of her upcoming web shows. She shared that we will focus on acting more and take Nish Hair to newer heights simultaneously. Stay tuned to HerZindagi for more such inspiring stories.
