Why Do Jeans Pockets Have Tiny Buttons On Them?

However, not everyone notices things like smaller pockets in women's clothing among many other things, regardless of whether we are with them everyday. The tiny buttons on the pockets of our jeans are another detail that goes unnoticed.

Why Do Jeans Have Snap Buttons?

The buttons on the pockets of the jeans have been around since 1829. The Levius Strauss company was relatively new at the time, and miners in the area wore fashionable jeans. During that period, labourers had to work extremely hard, and many of them complained about their pants pockets getting torn. Telv Jacob Davis solved this problem by putting little metal bits in the side of the pocket. These buttons are known as rivets, and they were inserted to strengthen the pocket. The pockets take a beating from everyday wear and tear, therefore these rivets were added to help strengthen the jeans.

By the way, Taylor Jacob deserves credit for this, and he intended to patent it in his name but lacked the funds. This is why, in 1872, he wrote a letter to the Lewis Company, explaining the problem and giving details about his finding.

This resulted in the copper buttons being later placed, and the Lewis firm appointed Jacob as their production manager.

That was the start of jeans pockets being buttoned.

Why Do Jeans Have Tiny Pockets?

You may have noticed that jeans have a small pocket that is often used to store various items such as pen drives, although it was originally designed to hold a pocket watch. It was created tiny enough to fit the pocket watch comfortably.
