How To Make Headbands From Scrap Fabric: Step-By-Step Guide

Step 1: Choose And Measure Your Fabric

First you need to pick a fabric that’s soft and about 18–22 inches long and 3–6 inches wide. If you want a twisted or knotted style, then cut the scrap fabric into wider strips, but for a sleek or stretchy band you should opt for narrower-width strips. You can use elastic if your scrap fabric is non-stretchy.

Step 2: Cut And Prep

Now, lay your fabric flat and cut it to the desired size of your headband. If you’re doing a simple headband, cut one long rectangle. For a knotted or twisted look, cut two equal strips. Then make sure to iron the fabric if it's wrinkled to make the sewing easier.

Step 3: Sew The Fabric

Finally, you will need to fold each strip in half lengthwise (right sides together) and sew along the long edge to form a tube. Turn the tube right side out. If you’re using elastic, measure around your head and subtract about 2 inches—this will be the length of your fabric piece. Cut elastic to about 5–6 inches and attach it between the two ends of the tube by tucking in the edges and sewing it in place.

Step 4: Add A Twist Or Knot (Optional)

To make a twisted headband, cross the two fabric tubes over each other in the centre, then sew the ends together on both sides. For a knotted headband, tie a loose knot in the middle before sewing the ends.

Step 5: Finish And Style

Once everything’s sewn, try it on and make adjustments as needed. You can add embellishments like buttons, beads, or lace for extra flair.
