How Mawlynnong, Meghalaya Sustains Its Legacy as Asia’s Cleanest Village

Located in Meghalaya, East Khasi Hills, approximately 90 km from Shillong, Mawlynnong earned the title of “Asia’s Cleanest Village” from Discover India in 2003. This village of roughly 900 residents, is a living example of community-led sustainability and unique cultural traditions. 

The 2026 Sunday Rule

A significant change was introduced in March 2026, when Mawlynnong was closed to day-trippers on Sunday. This rule was implemented by the village council, and the idea behind this was to preserve Sundays for church and family time. It was also aimed to let the residents rest. The guests who had booked their stays were welcome to stay overnight, but the day-trippers were not allowed. Buses would move back from Shillong, making weekdays perfect for visit.

The Culture of Cleanliness

The village's reputation is maintained through a deeply ingrained social mechanism rather than municipal staff.

1. Community Bylaws: Every resident, including children, participates in sweeping public paths.

2. Waste Management: Roughly 150 bamboo dustbins line the paths. Organic waste is composted to feed household gardens, while plastic has been banned for over two decades.

3. Social Enforcement: Cleanliness is enforced through social standing within the village council rather than through legal fines.

Khasi Matrilineal Heritage

Mawlynnong offers a window into the Khasi matrilineal system, where lineage and property pass through the mother’s line. The youngest daughter, or Ka Khadduh, inherits the ancestral home and the responsibility of caring for parents. Children take their mother's clan name, and women are the primary custodians of both household and public spaces.

While often associated directly with Mawlynnong, the famous single-decker living root bridge is actually located in the neighboring village of Riwai, just 2 km away. Known as the Jingmaham Living Root Bridge, this 300-year-old structure is crafted from the roots of the Indian rubber fig and is a must-visit for any traveler in the area.
