Born on December 27, 1987 in Nagpur, Girija comes from a family deeply rooted in Marathi cinema. She is the daughter of celebrated actor Girish Oak and is married to filmmaker Suhrud Godbole. Despite her artistic background, Girija pursued a degree in biotechnology and later trained in business management and theatre, before finding her true calling in acting.
Her filmography spans across languages. In Marathi cinema, she is best known for ‘Gulmohar’, ‘Lajja’, and ‘Navra Maza Bhavra’, while she also appeared in the Kannada film ‘House Full’. Speaking to Hindustan Times, Girija admitted that her phone “hasn’t stopped buzzing” since the viral moment. “I am amused! I was in rehearsals for my play and couldn’t take calls,” she said, adding that the sudden attention came as a shock.

She also addressed how some social media handles sexualised her images, saying, “Some pages picked up my pictures and there was a whole ‘bhabhi lover’ scene happening. But Marathi fans were quick to defend me, they said, ‘You’ve only just discovered her! We’ve known her for years.’” Despite the chaos, Girija remains grounded, “The work I do is here to stay. If people are discovering it now, that makes me happy.”
