Veteran actor Annu Kapoor recently sat down for a raw and deeply personal chat with Siddharth Kannan, revisiting a painful chapter that still haunts his family. While most remember the late Om Puri as a cinematic powerhouse, Annu chose to pull back the curtain on the man behind the accolades, focusing on the lasting damage caused to his sister, Seema Kapoor.

Annu didn’t mince words when acknowledging Om Puri’s immense talent. “Om Puri was a phenomenal actor. There was no great actor like him, but that was a different matter,” he noted, making a sharp distinction between Puri’s professional genius and his private failings.

For Annu, the legend of the actor cannot mask the reality of the man who married his sister. Seema Kapoor was Om Puri’s first wife, but the marriage began to crumble almost as soon as it started. Annu revealed that the betrayal hit its peak when Puri became involved with journalist Nandita Puri while Seema was actually pregnant.

Reflecting on the infidelity, Annu spoke with the protective heat of a sibling. “He became someone’s husband, and after becoming someone’s husband, he betrayed a woman, and that is where things went wrong, and I am that woman’s brother,” he stated firmly.

What makes the situation even more complex for the Kapoor family is that Seema remained a pillar of support for Puri, even after their world fell apart. Annu claimed that his sister’s care likely extended the actor’s life by a decade. “He would have gone 10 years earlier, it was my sister who took care of him,” he said.

Watching his sister dedicate herself to a man who had hurt her so deeply left Annu feeling conflicted and, at times, furious. He admitted, “I was also angry and upset with my sister,” hinting at the frustration of seeing a loved one choose to care for someone who had caused them nothing but grief.

Despite the bitterness of the past, Annu insists he isn't looking for a fight today. He expressed that he holds no ill will towards Puri’s son or his ex-wife, Nandita. However, the sense of loss for his sister remains heavy. “Today Om Puri saab is not there... I have no enmity towards anyone, but there is regret that my sister Seema Kapoor’s life was ruined; she has no support,” he shared.

While he was incredibly candid, Annu hinted that there is much more he could say, but chooses not to for the sake of peace. He explained that diving too deep into the archives of the past would only lead to a "messy" situation.

“If I start telling those stories, it will become messy because the brother inside me will come out… I was helpless; I could not do anything,” he added.

Seema and Om Puri’s relationship began when she was just 19, despite an 11-year age gap. Though they were united by their love for the theatre, the marriage soured within months, leading to a long separation and a difficult legal battle that changed the course of Seema’s life forever.
