In the ever-evolving world of at-home hair colouring, Streax and L’Oréal Paris are the two names that consistently top the natural brown spectrum. Both promise radiant colour, grey hair coverage, and that coveted salon-like finish without the salon price tag. But when it comes to actual performance, which one truly reigns supreme? At HZ Tried & Tested, we decided to put these popular picks through a proper side-by-side trial, scrutinising everything from application to aftercare.
The Streax Cream Hair Colour (Natural Brown 4) comes with a colourant, developer, conditioner, gloves and an instruction leaflet. The packaging feels fuss-free and fairly intuitive. The crème texture mixes well and doesn’t drip during application, making it beginner-friendly.
On the other hand, L'Oréal Paris Excellence Crème (Natural Brown 4) steps up the game with a more premium feel. It includes a pre-colour serum, developer, colouring crème, post-colour shampoo and conditioner, emphasising hair protection at each stage. The pre-serum, in particular, is a thoughtful addition, protecting dry ends from over-processing.
Verdict: While both are user-friendly, L'Oréal gets points for its comprehensive prep-and-care system.
After the recommended 30–35 minutes of development time, both shades delivered the promised natural brown hue. However, there was a subtle difference in tone.
Streax’s Natural Brown leans towards warm, almost verging on chestnut under sunlight, which works wonderfully for dusky and olive complexions. It adds a vibrant sheen and disguises greys effectively, but may fade quickly if you wash your hair frequently.
L'Oréal's Natural Brown offers a cooler, slightly ashy undertone, giving you a more subdued, elegant look. The richness of the pigment makes the shade look more dimensional and high-end, even in natural light.
Verdict: If you want warmth and vibrance, Streax hits the spot. But for a refined, long-lasting hue, L’Oréal takes the lead.
Let’s address the elephant in the room, ‘grey coverage.’ Both brands claim 100% grey coverage. In our testing, L'Oréal did slightly better in terms of evenness, particularly at the roots and temples, where greys are often most stubborn.
After 3 weeks and around 7 hair washes:
While no hair dye can eliminate chemical impact, some do better than others in softening the blow.
There’s a stark price difference, and understandably so. Streax is a great budget pick for quick touch-ups or those new to hair dyeing. However, if you want a more pampering and lasting experience, L'Oréal justifies the cost.
