When it comes to grooming down there, most people choose between shaving and waxing. While both methods are super common, each comes with its own benefits and downsides. But which one is actually better for your skin? Let’s break it down with the help of - Dr Srishti Jain, Assistant Professor, Department of Dermatology, NIIMS Medical College & Hospital

Shaving Pubic Hair

Shaving uses a razor to cut hair right at the skin’s surface. It’s quick, affordable, and convenient, especially if you’re in a hurry. Dr Jain said, “Since the pubic area has delicate skin, shaving without care can lead to razor burns, small cuts, or even infections if tools aren’t clean.”

Pros of shaving pubic hair:

  • Super quick and easy to do at home.
  • Budget-friendly, just a razor and some shaving cream.
  • Less messy and fuss-free compared to waxing.
  • Works well when you don’t have the energy for a longer routine.

Cons of shaving pubic hair:

  • Can lead to irritation, redness, or razor bumps.
  • Higher chances of getting ingrown hairs.
  • Hair grows back quickly, so you will need to shave often to stay smooth.

Waxing Pubic Hair

Waxing involves applying warm wax to the skin and pulling it off quickly to remove hair from the root. This means you will stay hair-free for a longer time, anywhere from 3 to 6 weeks. Dr Jain said, “It’s not pain-free and might not be ideal if you have very sensitive skin.”

Benefits of waxing pubic hair:

  • Long-lasting results, no need to worry about regrowth for weeks.
  • Lower chance of ingrown hairs compared to shaving.
  • Leaves your skin feeling soft and smooth.

Drawbacks of waxing pubic hair

  • Can be quite painful, especially for first-timers or those with low pain tolerance.
  • Risk of burns, bruises, or scarring if done incorrectly.
  • It can get expensive, especially if you go to a salon regularly.

Shaving vs Waxing Pubic Hair: Which One Should You Choose?

It really depends on your skin sensitivity, pain tolerance, and how much time you want to spend on maintenance. If you prefer a quick, painless method, shaving is a good go-to. But if you’re okay with a little pain in exchange for longer-lasting smoothness, waxing might be more your style.

Whichever method you go for, don’t skip pre- and post-care. Clean your tools, exfoliate gently, and always moisturise afterwards to keep your skin happy and irritation-free.
