Castor oil, specifically Jamaican Black Castor Oil or Cold-Pressed Castor Oil, is famous for its high concentration of Ricinoleic Acid, which promotes scalp circulation and has anti-fungal properties, both key factors in supporting hair growth. However, its thickness requires special handling, especially in the cold.
Castor oil is too viscous to use on its own, especially in winter when it thickens further. Applying it undiluted can clog pores and be difficult to wash out. Always dilute castor oil by blending it with a lighter carrier oil in a 1:3 ratio.
Coconut Oil: Excellent for deep penetration and preventing protein loss.
Almond Oil: Lighter, rich in Vitamin E for shine and softness.
Jojoba Oil: Mimics natural scalp sebum, balancing oil production.

In cold weather, oil absorption slows down. Warming the oil opens the hair cuticles and allows the Ricinoleic Acid to penetrate the scalp more effectively.
The Method: Pour the mixed oil (Castor + Carrier) into a small, heat-safe bowl. Place this bowl inside a larger bowl filled with hot water (this is called the double-boiler method) for 2-3 minutes.
For hair growth, focus 90% of your application on the scalp, where hair follicles reside.
Application: Part your hair into small sections using a comb. Dip your fingers or a small cotton ball into the warm oil mixture and apply it directly onto the scalp.
The Massage: Vigorously massage your scalp using your fingertips (not nails) for 5-7 minutes. This increases blood flow to the follicles, maximising the growth-boosting effects of the Ricinoleic Acid.

The remaining oil can be used to treat the dry, brittle ends that are prone to breakage in winter. Lightly coat the mid-lengths and ends of your hair with the remaining oil mixture.
Wrap your hair in a warm, damp towel or wear a shower cap for at least 60 minutes. This heat penetration helps the oil seal in moisture and prevent winter static and frizz.
Castor oil is thick and difficult to remove, and residue can flatten hair and attract dirt.
Use the 'dry shampoo' method. Before getting your hair wet, apply a small amount of shampoo directly to your oiled scalp and hair. Lather the shampoo slightly into the dry oil, then rinse thoroughly with water.
Follow up with a second, normal shampoo wash and condition the ends. This double-cleanse technique ensures all the heavy oil is fully removed.
