We all chose makeup to define our facial features, especially during festivals and wedding functions. It’s a great way to enhance your look but sometimes we overdo the makeup which impacts the skin internally. Furthermore, putting on makeup for a long run can be detrimental to overall skin health. With festivals started in most parts of India, we spoke to Ms Nidhi Govil, Founder & CEO, of Orive Organics. She shared a few tips that can help you protect your skin from makeup impacts.
Here are some tips that can help protect your skin from makeup damage:
Nidhi Govil emphasises prepping the skin with nourishing skincare products that feel light on the skin. She suggests applying a lightweight fresh gel texture base that hydrates the skin and imparts a dewy glow, creating a flawless base.
Festive seasons often call for dazzling looks, which usually involve heavy makeup. While looking your best during celebrations is important, it's equally crucial to protect your skin from the potential harm of makeup overload. Layers of foundation, highlighters, and other products can clog pores, cause breakouts, and lead to long-term skin issues if not managed properly. Nidhi Govil suggests having a solid skincare routine. You can begin with a clean, well-moisturised face before applying any makeup. She emphasises hydration which is a key to maintaining the skin’s natural barrier, preventing makeup from settling into fine lines or causing dryness. You can finish off with a primer suited to your skin type that will create a protective layer, ensuring makeup stays in place without seeping into pores.
Though we can’t skip on makeup, we can at least choose the right makeup products to safeguard our skin. Nidhi Govil suggests opting for makeup products that are non-comedogenic, breathable formulas that are less likely to clog pores. You can also go with mineral-based makeup as they are gentle options and often contain fewer harsh chemicals.

To enhance the look and conceal dark spots, we often overload our skin with layers of makeup which can lead to clogged pores and several other skin issues. Nidhi Govil advises keeping layers light, building up only where necessary for a natural look while minimising the risk of skin irritation.
Nidhi Govil advises investing ample time in the makeup removal process. She shares that, no matter how late the festivities run, always remove your makeup before bed. She emphasises double cleansing. Start with an oil-based cleanser to break down makeup, followed by a gentle water-based cleanser – which ensures thorough removal, preventing breakouts and allowing your skin to breathe overnight.

Skin needs extra care after an overloaded makeup (post makeup skincare tips) dose. Nidhi Govil advises applying a hydrating mask and serum to repair the skin barrier and replenish moisture. She asks to engage in a weekly exfoliation routine as it will help remove any residual product buildup, keeping your skin fresh and healthy even after multiple celebrations.
