Wonderinghow to prevent hair damage from the scorching summer sun?In this article, we'll share seven expert tips from DrNeha Khuraana, MD, a Board-certified Dermatologist and founder of House of Aesthetics, Delhi.
"Sun-drenched days, poolside lounging, and balmy brunches, summer may be the season of glow, but your hair often pays the price. Between relentless UV rays and sweat-induced dryness, your strands can go from sleek to straw-like in no time. Result in more frizz, breakage, and a total loss of shine. But a few simple tweaks to your routine can keep your hair healthy, shiny, and protected all season long," shared Dr Khuraana.
1.Cover your head properly
The simplest way to protect your hair from the sun is by covering it. Wear a wide-brimmed hat or wrap a scarf around your head when stepping out. Choose breathable, lightweight fabrics like cotton or linen that won’t trap heat or sweat.
2.Avoid over washing hair
Sweat might tempt you to shampoo daily, but overwashing can strip your scalp of natural oils, leaving it dry and irritated. Instead, rinse your hair with plain water or use a gentle cleansing conditioner between washes. Limit shampooing to 2-3 times a week and always follow with a hydrating conditioner.
3.Hair also needs UV protection
Just like your skin, your hair needs sun protection too. Look for hair serums, leave-in conditioners, or sprays with built-in UV filters. Ingredients like argan oil, vitamin E, and shea butter not only shield from UV rays but also add moisture and shine.
4.Loose hair styles
Sweat and friction can lead to tangles and breakage. Avoid leaving your hair open when outdoors. Instead, opt for loose buns, braids, or ponytails to reduce sweat contact and friction.
5.Hydration and nutrition are of utmost importance
Healthy hair starts from within. Drink plenty of water to maintain scalp hydration and include summer-friendly foods rich in antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, and biotin—like cucumbers, berries, nuts, and flaxseeds.
6.Weekly session of deep conditioning
Combat dryness and frizz with a weekly deep conditioning or oil massage. Coconut oil, almond oil, or aloe vera masks work wonders in restoring lost moisture and soothing a sun-stressed scalp.
7.Minimise heat styling treatments
Already the heat from sun is ruining your hair and on the top of it comes hot hair tools such as hair straighteners or curlers. Hair should rather be just air dried for retaining a more natural texture.
