How To Pick Sunscreen For Sensitive Skin: Expert Decodes

How To Choose Sunscreen For Sensitive Skin: Choosing the right sunscreen is tricky when your sensitive skin reacts to everything with redness or itching. But sunscreen is also one of the most important steps in your skincare routine. The aim isn’t just sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, but finding a formula your skin can actually tolerate every day without irritation.
To know things in details, we connected with Dr Prachi B Bodkhe, Dermatologist at Envi Aesthetics - MBBS, MD Dermatology, Fellowship in Lasers, Aesthetic Medicine & Dermatosurgery, who shared expert tips on what really works for sensitive skin and what to avoid:
4 Tips To Choose Sunscreen For Sensitive Skin
1. Mineral Sunscreens
When it comes to sensitive skin, mineral sunscreens are usually the safest option. These contain zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, which sit on top of the skin instead of getting absorbed deeply. Dr Prachi B Bodkhe explains, “I usually suggest starting with mineral sunscreens with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. They sit on the surface rather than getting absorbed, so they’re generally less irritating.”
This reduces the chance of irritation. Zinc oxide is especially helpful as it tends to calm the skin while offering strong UV protection. These sunscreens are often better tolerated by people who react easily to chemical filters.
2. Sunscreens With Simple Formulations
For sensitive skin, less is more. Look for fragrance-free, alcohol-free, non-comedogenic formulas. “Light weight, hydrating lotion based sunscreens are tolerated well by sensitive skin. Heavy textures or too many added actives can trigger sensitivity, even if the sunscreen is technically - Safe”, says Dr Prachi B Bodkhe.
Avoid products with too many added actives, as they can increase the risk of sensitivity even if the sunscreen itself is effective. Keeping your skincare routine simple helps your skin stay calm and balanced.

3. Skin Barrier Health
A healthy skin barrier plays a big role in how well your sunscreen works for you. If your skin is already irritated due to over-exfoliation, strong actives, or recent treatments, even a good sunscreen may sting. “No sunscreen will feel right if the skin barrier is compromised, so healing the skin should come first”, advises Dr Prachi B Bodkhe.
In such cases, it’s better to focus on repairing the barrier first with a gentle moisturiser before reintroducing sunscreen. Once the skin is calmer, protection becomes much more comfortable.

4. Sunscreen For Sensitive Skin: What To Avoid
Sensitive skin reacts quickly to triggers like fragrance, alcohol, or heavy active ingredients. Even sun protection products can sometimes cause stinging or redness if they’re not suited to your skin type. She further shared, “Sensitive skin needs sunscreen that protects without overwhelming the skin barrier or triggering unnecessary reactions.”
That’s why choosing sunscreen isn’t just about protection levels, but also about how gentle the formula is on your skin barrier. A careful choice helps prevent daily discomfort and long-term irritation.
Note: Choosing a perfect sunscreen for sensitive skin can be frustrating sometimes. Please consult your dermatologist before applying any product on your face especially if you have sensitive skin.
