Oiling your hair in winter is crucial for combating the dryness, frizz, and breakage caused by cold air and indoor heating systems. Achieving maximum benefits, however, requires more than just applying oil. To effectively nourish your hair and scalp during the harsh season, you need to follow the proper technique. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to oil your hair the right way in winter.
Winter demands thicker, richer oils that provide intense moisture and form a protective barrier against cold air.
Coconut Oil (penetrates the hair shaft)
Almond Oil (rich in Vitamin E)
Castor Oil (thick and great for scalp circulation)
Pro Tip: Consider blending a lighter oil (like Argan or Jojoba) with a heavier oil (like Castor or Coconut) for balanced nourishment.
Cold oil does not penetrate the scalp or hair shaft effectively. Warming it maximises absorption and stimulates blood circulation. Pour the required amount of oil into a small, heatproof bowl. Place this bowl into a larger bowl filled with hot water for a few minutes. The oil should be comfortably warm, not hot.

The scalp is where oiling is most effective for improving blood flow and reducing flaking. Use your fingertips to dip into the warm oil. Part your hair into small sections and gently massage the oil directly onto your scalp in circular motions. Spend 5 to 10 minutes massaging. This is key to boosting circulation and allowing the oil to reach the roots.

After the scalp, focus on the length and the most damaged parts of the hair. Gently run the remaining oil through the length of your hair, starting from mid-shaft and concentrating heavily on the ends. The ends are the oldest and driest part of the hair and need maximum sealing. Don't rub the oil vigorously into the strands; this can cause breakage. Just smooth it on.

Using a warm towel helps open the hair cuticles, allowing the oil to penetrate deeper into the hair shaft. Dip a towel in hot water, wring out the excess water, and immediately wrap your hair in the warm, moist towel. Leave the hot towel wrapped around your head for 15 to 20 minutes.
The duration you leave the oil in and how you wash it out impacts the final result. For maximum benefit in winter, leave the oil on for at least 2 hours or, ideally, overnight.
Do not wet your hair before applying shampoo. Apply shampoo directly to your oiled, dry scalp first, massage well to break down the oil, then add water and lather. You may need to wash and rinse twice.
