If there is one thing Korean beauty culture has mastered, it is the art of simplicity. You don't always need a cupboard full of luxury products to see real results; often, the best fixes are sitting right in your kitchen. Two ingredients in particular, aloe vera and rice water, have gained a massive following for their ability to transform dull, thinning hair.

The beauty of this serum is that it costs next to nothing. You can whip it up at home without any chemistry degree or fancy equipment.

Why Aloe Vera and Rice Water Helps Hair Growth

Aloe vera acts like a cooling, hydrating drink for your scalp. If you struggle with itchiness, dandruff, or irritation, especially in the summer heat, aloe calms everything down. It is loaded with vitamins A, C, and E, which help turn over cells and keep your scalp healthy enough for hair to actually grow.

Rice water might look like cloudy leftovers, but it is liquid gold for your strands. It is rich in minerals and antioxidants that reinforce the hair shaft, meaning less breakage and a lot more shine. Women in East Asia have used fermented rice water for centuries to maintain floor-length, healthy hair. When you mix the two, you get a serum that hydrates the scalp while strengthening the hair from the root.

DIY Korean Summer Hair Growth Serum Ingredients

  • 1 fresh aloe vera leaf (or 3–4 tablespoons of pure, store-bought aloe gel)
  • ½ cup of rice (any variety works, white, brown, or jasmine)
  • 2 cups of water
  • Optional: 1 teaspoon of argan or coconut oil (if your hair is very dry)
  • Optional: 5 drops of rosemary essential oil (brilliant for extra growth stimulation)
  • A clean spray bottle

Prepare the Fermented Rice Water

First, rinse the rice thoroughly to get rid of any dust or impurities. Put the clean rice in a bowl with 2 cups of water and let it soak for about 30 minutes. Strain the water into a jar, cover it, and let it sit at room temperature for 12 to 24 hours.

Extract the Aloe Vera Gel

If you are using a fresh leaf, slice off the spiked edges and peel back the skin. Scoop out the clear, gooey gel. Avoid the yellow sap (aloin) near the skin, as it can be irritating. Put the gel in a blender until it’s a smooth liquid.

Combine and Customise

In a bowl, mix 4 tablespoons of your smooth aloe gel with half a cup of your fermented rice water. Stir it well until it looks like a thin, watery serum. If you want to boost blood flow to the scalp, add your rosemary oil now.

Storage

Pour the mixture into your spray bottle. Since this is 100% natural with no preservatives, you must keep it in the fridge. It will stay fresh for about a week.

How to Apply?

Section your hair and spray the serum directly onto your skin. Use your fingertips to massage it in for five minutes. This boosts circulation and ensures the nutrients reach the follicles. Leave it on for 30 minutes (or overnight) before washing your hair as usual. After your shower, mist a small amount onto damp hair, focusing on the mid-lengths and ends. It helps kill frizz and adds a healthy glow once it dries.

How Often Should You Use It?

For real results, use the scalp treatment 2–3 times a week. You can use it every time you wash your hair. You’ll notice your hair feels softer within days, but for actual ‘growth’ and thickness, give it at least 6 to 8 weeks of regular use.
