With so many different opinions and skincare routines out there, it can be challenging to determine the best approach for your skin type and needs. So how often should you wash your face? Our expert, Dr Mikki Singh, Founder & Head Dermatologist at Bodycraft Clinics & Salon, shared her insights to guide you through.
Morning (with or without cleanser): Dr Singh shared that in the morning, your skin may not be visibly dirty, but it does accumulate oil, sweat, and leftover skincare products overnight. She shared:
Night (always with cleanser): “This is non-negotiable,” said the expert. She also mentioned that your skin faces dirt, pollution, sweat, makeup, and SPF during the day. A gentle but effective cleanser at night helps remove all of this, preventing clogged pores, dullness, and breakouts.
Dr Mikki said, “If your skin is dry, easily irritated, or you deal with conditions like eczema, rosacea, or perioral dermatitis, overwashing can worsen the situation. The best routine for you is to skip cleanser in the morning and rinse with plain water. Use a non-foaming, fragrance-free cleanser at night only. This minimal approach supports your natural skin barrier and reduces inflammation.”

“Living in India, or anywhere hot and humid, means sweating is inevitable, especially during workouts or long commutes. Why cleanse after sweating? Sweat can trap bacteria, dead skin, and pollutants, increasing the risk of breakouts and irritation,” said Dr Singh. She also mentioned that using a gentle cleanser can be your best option. You are advised to avoid scrubs or high-foaming face washes post-sweat, as your skin may be more sensitive.
