Beauty Products Around The Eyes: Are They Affecting Vision? Know From Your Expert

According to Dr Shibal Bhartiya, Clinical Director of Ophthalmology, Marengo Asia Hospitals, Gurugram, “she has lost count of the number of women who come into my clinic with dry, irritated eyes and are surprised when I ask about their eye makeup. Most expect me to talk about allergies or screen time. Very few imagine that the culprit may be sitting in their makeup bag.

The Hidden Risks of Eye Makeup

The skin of the eyelids is the thinnest anywhere on the body, yet we often treat it as though it can tolerate anything. Kajal applied on the waterline, eyeliner pressed right against the lashes, mascara that has been opened for months, and eye creams applied too close to the lids can all affect the health of the eyes.

The Dangers of Tightlining and Blocked Glands

The habit that concerns me most is tightlining, that is, applying kajal to the inner rim of the eyelid. This area contains the openings of the meibomian glands, tiny oil glands that produce the outer layer of our tears. That oil slows tear evaporation and keeps the surface of the eye comfortable. Repeatedly coating these gland openings can contribute to blockage, leading to dry eye, recurrent styes and inflammation of the eyelid margins. Many patients never make the connection until the problem becomes chronic.

How Under-Eye Creams Cause Irritation

Under-eye creams can create a different problem. During sleep, products applied close to the lashes often migrate into the eye. Ingredients such as retinol, fragrances and preservatives may be well tolerated by the surrounding skin but can irritate the delicate surface of the eye. Keeping the cream a finger width from the lash line is usually enough.

Cosmetic Hygiene and Bacterial Risks

Hygiene matters just as much. Mascara should be replaced every three months, eye makeup should never be shared, and brushes should be cleaned regularly. Bacteria thrive in old cosmetics, increasing the risk of infections ranging from simple styes to conjunctivitis. Lash growth serums also deserve careful thought. Some contain prostaglandin analogues that may darken the iris, increase pigmentation of the eyelids and even cause hollowing around the eyes with prolonged use.

Hazards of Lash Serums, Glues, and Glitter

False eyelashes and glitter eye makeup deserve caution too. Lash glue and glitter in eye shadows can trigger allergic reactions and, if applied carelessly, may scratch the cornea. Always remove false lashes gently, avoid sleeping in them, and never use craft glitter around the eyes. If your eyes are persistently red, watery, gritty, or your vision blurs after using cosmetics, don't simply blame allergies or fatigue. A careful look at your beauty routine may reveal the answer. Looking after your eyes doesn't mean giving up makeup. It simply means using it thoughtfully. Healthy eyes are always more beautiful than those with makeup.
