Dussehra, or Vijayadashami, is a significant Hindu festival that marks the defeat of evil forces by the good that represents the power of righteousness. The most significant element of Dussehra is the Ravana Dahan, i.e., the burning of Ravana's effigy. People across the country gather on this day to celebrate the victory of good over evil. It also marks the last day of Navratri, so it is also the day to bid Goddess Durga goodbye. We spoke to astrologer Radhakant Vats about the Dussehra 2024 date, time, rituals, history, and more. 

Dussehra 2024: Date

This year Dussehra falls on October 12, 2024; it is a Saturday. The Dashami Tithi, which is the tenth day of the lunar calendar's Shukla Paksha in Ashwin month, begins at 10:58 AM on October 12 and ends at 9:08 AM on Sunday, October 13. Although, as per our expert astrologer Radhakant Vats, Dashami continues into October 13, 2024, Dussehra will be celebrated on October 12, 2024, as the main ritual of Ravana Dahan is celebrated during the evening.

Dussehra 2024: Shubh Muhurat Or Auspicious Timing

As per expert astrologer Radhakant Vats, “On the day of Dussehra, the most auspicious time for performing rituals is during the Vijay Muhurat, which lasts from 2:03 PM to 2:49 PM on October 12.” Additionally, one should also note that the Shravan Nakshatra will be active from 5:25 AM on October 12 until 4:27 AM on October 13.

Dussehra 2024: Significance And History

Dussehra signifies Lord Ram's triumph over Ravana. It marks the end of the nine-day festival of Navratri and the day when Lord Ram, with the blessings of Goddess Durga, defeated the ten-headed demon Ravana, who had kidnapped Ram’s wife, Sita.

The tradition of Ravana Dahan (burning of Ravana’s effigy) has been followed for centuries, signifying the end of negativity and the beginning of positivity. It is believed that witnessing Ravana Dahan is auspicious and brings good luck while performing puja dedicated to Lord Ram invites success and courage into one’s life.
