The Boys Season 5 Episode 5 Recap

The episode kicks off with Firecracker doing what she does best: stroking Homelander’s ego. She’s busy rebranding him as a prophet, though Homelander, ever the modest soul, decides he’d rather just be worshipped as God himself. While Sage warns of brewing civil unrest, Firecracker gets a mysterious call from Florida that she’s clearly keen to ignore.

Later, we see her sneak off to a diner to meet her former reverend. It’s a tense encounter; he’s apologetic for their past, but he isn’t buying into the ‘Homelander is God’ trope. Firecracker tries to recruit him into her new cult, but he stands his ground, reminding her that just because a Supe says it’s true doesn’t make it so.

The betrayal comes swiftly. After a brief, awkward fling with Soldier Boy (who finds the whole ‘Homelander is God’ thing hilarious), Firecracker goes on telly. She tears her old mentor’s life apart, accusing him of being a Starlighter sympathiser and a groomer. It’s a cold-blooded move, even if the tears on her face suggest she hasn't completely lost her soul yet.

The Boys Season 5 Episode 5 Recap: Black Noir II Wants to Tread the Boards

We finally get a look behind the mask of the new Black Noir, a bloke named Justin. It turns out he’s an aspiring actor working on a play directed by Adam Bourke. The two actually hit it off, with Bourke giving Justin the confidence to stand up to his ‘annoying co-worker’, which happens to be The Deep.

When Justin tries to show some backbone during a podcast recording, The Deep doesn't take it well. In a truly disgusting display of pettiness, The Deep follows Justin to the theatre and kills Adam Bourke by... well, let's just say it involved an eel and a very unpleasant entry point. He then blackmails Justin into silence, threatening to expose his acting side-hustle to Homelander.

The Boys Season 5 Episode 5 Recap: Terror, Butcher, and the V1

In a weirdly charming segment, we see the world through the eyes of Terror, Butcher’s dog. Between dreams of humping a Homelander plushie, Terror watches the Boys scramble for their next move.

MM and Butcher have a heart-to-heart about the futility of their mission. MM is a shell of a man, convinced he’s already dead and only sticking around because he’s got nothing left to lose. Meanwhile, Hughie and Butcher are at loggerheads over the V1. Hughie wants to use it to save Annie and Kimiko, but Butcher is adamant that it has to be destroyed before Homelander gets his hands on it. The tension breaks only when Terror nearly dies from eating chocolate out of the bin, thankfully, some hydrogen peroxide saves the day.

The Boys Season 5 Episode 5 Recap: Sage’s Endgame

Sister Sage finally lays her cards on the table during a chat with Ashley (or ‘Back Ashley,’ as Sage calls her). It turns out Sage has been playing Homelander all along. She doesn't want him to find the V1, and she certainly doesn't want him in charge forever.

Her plan is pure chaos: Phase 1 was the takeover, but Phase 2 is the end of the world. She wants to leak a Supe-killing virus to trigger a global war between humans and Supes. While the world burns, Sage plans to sit in a posh bunker in Colorado and read books in peace. She even invites Ashley to join her, admitting she wants Homelander dead as much as anyone.

The Boys Season 5 Episode 5 Recap: The ‘Supernatural’ Reunion Goes Horribly Wrong

The meat of the episode involves Soldier Boy and Homelander hunting down the V1. After a visit to a jailed Stan Edgar, they head to Los Angeles to find Mister Marathon, played by none other than Jared Padalecki.

In what feels like a fever dream for ‘Supernatural’ fans, we find Marathon hanging out with a massive group of celebrities, including Seth Rogen, Kumail Nanjiani, and Malchemical (played by Misha Collins). It’s a full-on Winchester family reunion, complete with lines of cocaine and snarky comments.

However, the nostalgia ends when the actors reveal they want to kill Homelander. Malchemical tries to gas him, but Soldier Boy chooses blood over brotherhood. In a chaotic, baby-oil-slicked fight, Soldier Boy and Homelander butcher almost everyone in the room. Seth Rogen gets ripped in half, and Homelander eventually crushes Mister Marathon’s head like a grape.

The Boys Season 5 Episode 5 Recap: The Death of Firecracker

Back at the tower, the episode reaches its grim climax. Homelander confronts Firecracker about her tryst with Soldier Boy. He isn’t jealous of the sex; he’s insulted that she sought comfort elsewhere. He tells her she lacks faith and fires her on the spot.

Firecracker breaks down, pleading for her life and calling herself ‘Mother Mary’ to his God. For a second, it looks like her desperate flattery might work. Homelander reaches out, touches her face almost tenderly, and then he slams her head through a stone statue.

Firecracker is gone, and Homelander is more isolated and volatile than ever.
