Stranger Things Season 4 introduced the show's most terrifying and pivotal villain: Vecna. Far from being another monster, Vecna is revealed to be the true mastermind behind every catastrophe in Hawkins, starting with the opening of the first gate. His origin story ties directly to Eleven, as he is revealed to be Henry Creel, a.k.a. Subject 001 from Hawkins Lab, whom Eleven banished into the Upside Down in 1979.
Vecna's time in the Upside Down—the dimension frozen on the day Will Byers vanished in 1983—disfigured him, transforming him into the vine-covered humanoid creature. He didn't just survive; he became the Mind Flayer's general and the core of the Upside Down's hive mind. His ultimate goal is to tear down the dimensional walls and allow the Upside Down to spill into the real world, "cleansing" humanity, which he despises.
To achieve this, he employs a ritualistic killing spree, targeting emotionally traumatized teens like Chrissy, Fred, and Max. Each victim's death, facilitated through psychic torture, opens a new, powerful gate between the dimensions. He calculated that he required four such gates to create a catastrophic, permanent rupture.
The finale saw the heroes execute a three-pronged counter-attack. The California group (Eleven, Mike, Will, Argyle, and Jonathan) finds a way for Eleven to psychically enter Max's mind from a sensory deprivation tank. The Hawkins group sets a trap at the Creel House in the Upside Down, aiming to destroy Vecna's physical body. Meanwhile, Hopper and Joyce in Russia successfully kill a group of Demogorgons to weaken the hive mind.
Max heroically volunteers herself as bait, drawing Vecna's consciousness into her mind. Eleven battles him in the psychic landscape, but Vecna manages to break free and begin his killing ritual on Max, fulfilling the requirement for the fourth gate. Even as Steve, Nancy, and Robin seemingly destroy his physical body in the Upside Down, Max dies in Lucas's arms.
Although Eleven uses her powers to restart Max's heart, leaving her alive but comatose and blind, Vecna's plan succeeds. Max's temporary death completed the final gate, causing the four rifts to merge and unleash a cataclysmic fissure that splits Hawkins apart.
The season ends with the Upside Down's influence bleeding into the real world: ash-like spores fall, and the group watches the environmental decay spread, confirming the town is now partially consumed. Vecna's body vanished from the Upside Down Creel House, and Will ominously senses the villain is still alive and poised for a full-scale invasion, setting the stage for the final season.
