HZ Exclusive: Shivangi Joshi, Kushal Tandon On How Barsatein Isn't The Cliche Enemies To Lovers Trope

Barsatein: Mausam Pyaar Ka gives us a fresh pairing, television heartthrobs Kushal Tandon and Shivangi Joshi, the jodi wasn't on our bingo card but we couldn’t be happier. We have enough proof of their acting prowess, thanks to their mega-successful TV shows from the past, and with the two coming together, we only have our expectations going up! 

Ahead of Barsatein’s premiere on Sony Entertainment Television on July 10, 2023, I had a quick chat with actors Kushal Tandon and Shivangi Joshi on the sets of the show. Excerpts here - 

Barsatein: Not Your Regular Romantic Drama 

When you first watch Barsatein’s teaser on Sony TV, it looks like everyone’s favourite 'Enemies to lovers' trope. But does the show take that route? We asked Shivangi Joshi, who plays Aradhna Sahni on the show. She said, “It’s not like we are enemies in the beginning and then we turn into lovers. We play just two very strong-headed individuals who are different from each other. They have mutual respect for each other’s work but they are not interested in each other in the very beginning but they aren’t enemies. I said yes to the show because for me it had a refreshing take. It showcases how girls tend to fall for guys who are heartbreakers.”

Kushal Tandon who plays the owner of a leading news channel on the show said, “It is the story of two different but righteous personalities, their life is intertwined and they fall for each other.”

The Show To Break Taboos 

Today many television shows revolve around unexplored concepts, and try to break taboos and we asked Joshi if her upcoming show will touch upon any such subjects. She said, “Yes, Barsatein will definitely touch certain unexplored subjects, however, I can’t talk about it as of now as it will break the suspense of the show. But you get to see it in the very beginning of the show.”

Shivangi Joshi plays a journalist on the show and often when a woman's character is represented on a tv show, little to do we get to see about her success at the work front, eventually it all becomes about her marriage. When we asked Joshi about the journey of her character, she said, “She is different and a strong woman who knows what’s right and wrong for her, who wants to do better in her life in all aspects of her life.” “Marriage and kids, it is the journey of the character and it happens in real life as well,” she added. She further shared that her character Aradhna is a strong-headed woman, quite passionate about her show and we will get to see a lot more than just her personal life.

Shivangi Joshi And Kushal Tandon On Building Successful Careers From Scratch

We asked the two to share about their journey till Barsaatein. Both actors have no backing from showbiz but have built their careers from scratch and are two very successful and loved actors today. “After completing my education when I came back to India, I bagged my friend’s show, Ek Hazaro Me Meri Behna Hai, and then the rest is history. There is still a long way to go. Going forward I would like to do a movie but as of now, I am happy being an A-lister of television and web series. Whatever work I do, I want to be an A-lister on that.” Many offers did come Tandon’s way in the past but he just didn’t find the right script to mark his Bollywood debut. Further, he plans to dabble in production.

On the other hand, Joshi speaking about her journey to date said, “There were a lot of struggles through the journey but I am very proud of them now. I feel it is important to have struggles since they help you value your present more.” She added, “Going forward, I want to explore other platforms too. I recently did a mini-series on Amazon Mini TV and I am happy about it but I would like to explore more on the web and movies but obviously, everything will be done step by step. As of now, I am doing Barsatein and focusing on this only.”
