Netflix made an announcement on Thursday, stating that it has put an end to password sharing in India. According to the new policy, only members of the same household will have access to a single account. This move is part of a worldwide effort, which was initially revealed in May, to tackle the issue of users sharing passwords with individuals outside of their immediate family. The company's aim is to bolster revenue following a challenging period last year.
Netflix India Stops Users From Sharing Password
Netflix India, the worldwide streaming giant, has unveiled its policy to combat password sharing in India. The company initiated the distribution of emails to customers in the country. These emails clearly emphasise that Netflix accounts are meant to be used exclusively within a single household. The move by Netflix is surely sudden, without warning, but not unexpected. For a long time, reports have been doing rounds that Netflix will soon end password sharing among users and take measures to do so.
4 Things To Know About The New Netflix Password Ban
Back in May 2023, Netflix implemented the password-sharing restrictions across more than 100 countries, including major markets such as the United States, Britain, France, Germany, Australia, Singapore, Mexico, and Brazil. In addition, Netflix provided its paying customers with the choice to add an extra member from outside their household, but this would come with an additional monthly charge. Reportedly, in the United States, this fee is fixed at $8 (₹660). From July 20, 2023, the Netflix ban has also been introduced in India.
How Is Netflix Enforcing The Rule?
To implement the password-sharing rule, Netflix plans to send notifications to users who are accessing the streaming service with borrowed passwords. These users will be prompted to create their own separate accounts. The enforcement will involve the use of various factors such as IP addresses, device IDs, and account activity to identify those who belong to the same 'Netflix household.'

Who Will Face The Consequences Of The Netflix Password Sharing Ban?
The new password-sharing regulation introduced by Netflix will not impact members who share their account with others within the same household, regardless of whether they are at home or travelling. These users will still be able to enjoy features such as 'Transfer Profile' and 'Manage Access and Devices,' which will allow them to continue sharing the account. On the other hand, significant adjustments will be enforced for those who share a Netflix account with individuals outside of their household.
Alternate Option For Other Netflix Users
Netflix's standard plan allows subscribers to pay an additional fee to include one extra person who is not part of their household. Premium plan subscribers can add two additional members beyond their household. Each of these additional users will have their own unique profile, separate account, and a distinct password. However, it is important to note that these extra users will only be able to access the content available in their original country's membership.
What Actions Are Required From Netflix Users?
Initially, users need to review the list of logged-in accounts by accessing the security and privacy settings of their Netflix account. They would have to choose the 'Manage Access and Devices' feature. If there are individuals outside of their household using the account, they have the option to transfer their profile to ensure a proper and secure usage.
