Netflix's new romantic drama, My Oxford Year, starring Sofia Carson and Corey Mylchreest, has captured audiences with its blend of charming romance and heartbreaking reality. The film, based on the novel by Julia Whelan, follows the story of Anna, a determined American student on a year-long scholarship at Oxford, whose life plan is upended when she meets a local man named Jamie. The emotional and poignant ending has sparked significant discussion among viewers.
My Oxford Year Ending Explained
After learning about Jamie's illness, Anna makes the life-changing decision to stay in Oxford and give up her job in New York to be with him. Jamie, however, argues against her choice, not wanting her to sacrifice her future for him. Despite their disagreement, they reconcile, and Anna stays by his side.
In a heartbreaking turn, Jamie's health deteriorates, and he develops a critical case of pneumonia. He and Anna share a final, poignant moment in which they dream of the European "grand tour" they had always planned to take together. The film implies that he passes away peacefully in her arms. The movie's ending is notable for being different from the book, in which Jamie does not survive. In the film, Anna honours his memory by taking the European trip alone and ultimately returns to Oxford to take on Jamie's role as a poetry professor, teaching with the same passion and philosophy he did.

According to IMDb, the movie's gist reads, “When Anna, an ambitious young American woman, sets out for Oxford University to fulfil a childhood dream, she has her life completely on track until she meets a charming and clever local who profoundly alters both of their lives.”
