The Mehta Boys is now out on Amazon Prime. Helmed by Boman Irani in his directorial debut, the film has been written by him and Academy Award winner Alexander Dinelaris. The Mehta Boys stars Irani, Avinash Tiwary, Shreya Chaudhry, and Puja Sarup, among others. A heartwarming drama, it deals with a tense father-son relationship and how they navigate this challenge. So, if this rings the emotional strings in your heart, the following 5 father-son dramas should be next on your watchlist.
The Mehta Boys: 5 Other Father-Son Dramas To Watch
As per the gist of The Mehta Boys, the Amazon Prime film is about:
"A father and son embark on an involuntary 48-hour odyssey, navigating clashing perspectives as they confront the intricate nuances of their strained relationship."
So, if you are in the mood for similar father-son dramas, the names given below should help:
1) Wake Up Sid
At the core, Wake Up Sid is a love story but the relationship between Siddharth Mehra (Ranbir Kapoor) and his father Ram Mehra (Anupam Kher) forms the base. Siddharth aka Sid is a gifted but lazy college goer who has a contentious bond with his father because the latter wants him to take up the reins of his business, which he refuses. How he learns to be responsible, thanks to an aspiring writer, Aisha Banerjee, (Konkona Sen Sharma) from Kolkata, and how that helps him mend his ties with his father is the heart of the 2009 movie.
Wake Up Sid is available on Netflix.
2) Udaan
Not all father-son dramas will make you cry in happiness. Instead, tears will flow in pain. Udaan is one such. The 2010 film stars Ronit Roy as Bhairav Singh, an ultra-level abusive man to his two sons, Rohan Singh (Rajat Barmecha) and Arjun Singh (Aayan Boradia). How the brothers escape their toxic father and embark on a journey of their own forms the basic crux of Udaan.
Udaan is available on Netflix.

3) Paa
Paa saw a role reversal of the real-life father-son duo Amitabh and Abhishek Bachchan, which means Abhishek played Amitabh's father in the 2009 film, which is why it remained in the news for a long time. But, the R. Balki-directorial was more about how a heartbroken woman hides from her partner Amol Arte (Abhishek Bachchan) that Auro (Amitabh Bachchan) is their son since Amol wanted her to abort the foetus. Auro suffers from progeria, an extremely rare genetic disorder. How Amol learns about it later and, guilt-ridden, makes up for the lost time and emotions by being the best father to his dying son is what makes Paa a moving watch.
Paa is available on Google Play.
4) The Pursuit of Happyness
A smash hit at the box office and with critics, The Pursuit of Happyness is a biographical film on the rise of Chris Gardner from being a homeless salesman to owning a multimillion-dollar brokerage firm. However, the 2006 movie goes way beyond just being a rags-to-riches story. It beautifully showcases how Gardner desperately does whatever it takes to bring a comfortable life to his 5-year-old son while battling a destitute life and keeping the reality as brutal as possible in front of the kid. Will Smith stars as Gardner with Jaden Smith playing his son, Christopher Gardner Jr.
The Pursuit of Happyness is available on MX Player.
5) The Lion King
No father-son drama list is complete without the mention of The Lion King. The 1994 animated musical is about Simba, a young lion, who goes to exile after his uncle Scar murders his father, King Mufasa. How he returns to reclaim the throne and confront his evil uncle is the gist of The Lion King. Sounds like a revenge drama but the Disney movie is all about how a boy comes back to avenge his father's brutal murder, making it an ideal inclusion for this list.
The Lion King is available on Disney+ Hotstar.
