The world of ‘9-1-1’ is entering a new chapter, forever altered by the show's first major character death. The popular ABC drama, which debuted in 2018 and streams on JioHotstar for Indian viewers, follows the intense professional and personal lives of Los Angeles first responders. With Season 8 having just wrapped up and the release date for Season 9 on the horizon, it’s time to take a closer look at the cast lineup and find out which familiar faces are returning for the upcoming season.

‘9-1-1’ Cast

It’s now confirmed that Peter Krause will not be returning to ‘9-1-1,’ following the emotional exit of his character, Bobby Nash. While his departure marks the show's first major character death, the rest of the main cast is expected to remain. That includes Angela Bassett (Athena), Oliver Stark (Buck), Aisha Hinds (Hen), Kenneth Choi (Chimney), Jennifer Love Hewitt (Maddie), and Ryan Guzman (Eddie).

1. Athena Grant-Nash

Although Bassett is set to return, it remains to be seen how her character Athena will cope with losing her husband. Bassett has previously spoken about how central Bobby and Athena's bond was to the heart of the series.

2. Bobby Nash

In an April 2025 interview with Variety, showrunner Tim Minear revealed that Bobby’s death doesn’t mark Peter Krause’s final appearance this season. However, he also confirmed there’s no rush to fill Bobby’s role within the firehouse.

"I'm not immediately resolving who steps into Bobby’s position," Minear said as per TV Insider. "There is a temporary captain, but they’re not a long-term solution. The focus of the final episodes isn’t on a replacement, but on the absence Bobby leaves behind."

3. Evan ‘Buck’ Buckley

Buck continues to grapple with the loss of Bobby. In a chat with Us Weekly, Oliver Stark described Buck’s arc for the remainder of season 8 using three words: “Uncomfortable, opportunity, and devastating.”

4. Hen Wilson

Aisha Hinds is set to return as Hen and may also return behind the camera, potentially directing another episode.

In March 2025, she told Us Weekly about the challenges of directing: “I was nervous the whole time because I had no frame of reference. Even though people reassured me that I knew more than I thought, I had no idea how that knowledge would translate into the actual process.”

5. Howard ‘Chimney’ Han

Chimney, played by Kenneth Choi, has weathered many challenges, including a severe injury in season 1 and surviving a contagion but Bobby’s death hits him hard.

"Chimney’s been part of the 118 longer than anyone," Minear told USA Today. "He shared a deeply personal moment with Bobby when Bobby opened up about his past and intentions. That connection runs deep."

Minear added that the final episodes of the season are focused on navigating grief and slowly piecing things back together.
