Saima Wazed, WHO Regional Director for South-East Asia said, “On this year’s World Cancer Day themed United by Unique, which is a reminder of the collective commitment against cancer, WHO acknowledges every patient’s unique experiences and the value of people-centered care delivered jointly by healthcare providers, families, friends and community,” according to World Health Organization (WHO).

World Cancer Day History

World Cancer Day was first introduced on February 4, 1999, during the World Summit Against Cancer in Paris. The very next year, on February 4, 2000, the Charter of Paris Against Cancer was signed at the World Summit Against Cancer for the New Millennium, formally creating World Cancer Day.

At the time, cancer was not only affecting millions of lives but was also surrounded by stigma, misinformation, and limited access to treatment in many parts of the world. World Cancer Day was created to change that narrative by encouraging people to share knowledge, reduce the burden of the disease, and highlight the importance of global collaboration in the fight against cancer.

Every year, the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) and its partners work to spread educational materials, host events, and promote community engagement, ensuring that cancer awareness remains a priority across nations and cultures.
