New Parliament House: Women MPs Share Old Parliament House Memories Through Handwritten Notes

The Parliament House Of India situated in the heart of India, New Delhi, has been one of the most important infrastructures in India. Right from its construction in the British period to the date, the Indian Parliament has a special place in the hearts of those who have spent their days and nights within the walls. 

However, a recent turn of events made the Indian Parliament shift to a newer and more advanced infrastructure. With this historic change taking place, came the heartfelt responses of 10 women parliamentarians belonging to different political parties who penned down their nostalgia into handwritten notes sharing their memories attached to the old parliament house. They bid their farewells to the old building and responses are heart-touching indeed. 

Heartfelt Messages By Women MPs

Harsimrat Kaur Badal, an MP from Shiromani Akali Dal, wrote in the note, ‘These 144 pillars in this temple of democracy hold a multitude of memories for me.’ Priyanka Chaturvedi from Shiv Sena UBT expressed her appreciation towards the unprecedented changes that took place within those walls. She highlighted how she has encountered a lot there including friendships (Good Night Messages For Friends) and policy making. 

The Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra mentioned in her note, that the building "will always have a special place in my heart, as does anyone's first home". "Antim jay ka vajra banane, Nav Dadhichi haddiyan galaayein. Aao phir se diya jalaayein." poetically wrote the Bharatiya Janata Party MP Poonam Mahajan.

Women’s Position In Indian Parliament

Over the years, immense transitions have occurred in terms of gender equality in the political domain. Right from India getting its second woman President to women MPs being appointed for key roles, many changes could be seen in the spectrum of the Parliament of India as well. However, the percentage of Indian women politicians in the Lok Sabha still remains below 15 per cent which shows the political divide between the genders.

When the Lok Sabha was first elected, women parliamentarians were only 4.4 per cent. A huge reason behind the visible difference could be no reservations for any male or female candidate. Currently, there are 78 women in Lok Sabha and 24 in Rajya Sabha.
