Suchitra Sen, Inspiration behind Maa Durga's idol

Long before Bollywood celebrities were invited to pandals, Kolkata's Durga Puja had its own superstar muse, Suchitra Sen. In the era of the 1950s and 60s, when cinema was the biggest medium of entertainment, Suchitra Sen was not just an actress; she was called a Mahanayika. Slowly, she became a fashion icon, and Bengali women draped their sarees like her and wanted to look like her. And soon, so did the goddesses. It is a well-documented era of Kolkata that during Durga Puja, the idols of Maa Durga were modelled after Suchitra Sen's face.

Who was Suchitra Sen?

The legendary actress made her debut in Bengali cinema in 1952 with Shesh Kothaay, but it was never released. Her first official release was Sukumar Dasgupta's 1953 film Saat Number Kayedi. In no time, she became an icon, with her movies becoming blockbusters and people flocking to the theatres just to catch a glimpse of her.

As Bengali cinema's most successful actress, she was not only a star for the public but also an emotion. With films like Agnipariksha, Saptapadi, Saat Paake Bandha, and Bimal Roy's Devdas, she captured Bengal's imagination like no female star. Apart from her stellar performances and her talent for capturing complex emotions, her beauty was also considered ethereal, and her grace was unmatched.

The Story Behind The Maa Durga Idol Inspired By Suchitra Sen

They wanted their goddesses to look human, graceful and instantly lovable. And Suchitra Sen was an epitome of grace and elegance.
