Who Was Kanaklata Barua? Teen Freedom Fighter Killed By British For Hoisting The Indian Flag

Who Was Kanaklata Barua?
Kanaklata Barua was an Independence activist who was shot dead by the police of the British during a procession at the Quit India Movement of 1942. Born in 1924, she hailed from Assam. Both of her parents passed away, and she had to quit school to take care of her younger siblings.
She actively participated in India's fight for freedom against the British Raj and even joined a death squad called Mrityu Bahini with other youths during the Quit India Movement.

Why Was Kanaklata Barua Shot By The British?
On September 20, 1942, Mrityu Bahini decided to hoist the Indian flag at the local police station with Barua leading the procession of villagers, who were unarmed. The officer in charge of the police station warned the procession not to proceed with their plan.
Despite the warning, the villagers, along with Barua, continued with their procession, and the police started firing. Barua was shot dead along with Mukunda Kakoti, who had taken the flag from her.
Kanaklata Barua was only 17 at the time of her death.

How Did Kanaklata Barua Become A Symbol Of Courage?
Kanaklata Barua's fearless act and sacrifice are still remembered by the people, who are inspired by her bravery. Even though Barua and Kakoti were shot, the villagers persevered, entered the police station, and hoisted the Indian tricolour flag.
She is now immortalised as one of the icons of the Quit India Movement and became one of India's youngest martyrs. She was bestowed the title Birbala, which means brave woman, for her courageous act.
