Dr Ritu Karidhal Srivastava is a renowned aerospace engineer and scientist at the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). With experience in some of the most successful interplanetary and lunar exploration missions ever undertaken by ISRO, such as the Mars Orbiter Mission (Mangalyaan) and Chandrayaan missions, she has achieved great fame and importance through her career.

Who Is Ritu Karidhal?

Ritu Karidhal is a scientist and aerospace engineer with ISRO. She was highly acclaimed for her role in managing various space missions and was especially famous for her contributions to the most important space projects undertaken by India. It is because of her skills in spacecraft autonomy and mission operations that India emerged as a leading player in deep-space exploration.

Ritu Karidhal’s Education And Early Life

Ritu Karidhal is an accomplished woman scientist from Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. She grew up with a passion for space and astronomy. She completed her elementary and secondary education in Lucknow.

She pursued her Bachelor’s and Master’s in Physics from the University of Lucknow. Further, she pursued her Master’s (M.Tech) in Aerospace Engineering from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru. She has been honoured with an honorary doctorate (D.Sc.) from the University of Lucknow.

How Did Ritu Karidhal Join ISRO?

In 1997, Ritu Karidhal was appointed to ISRO after she finished her education at IISc Bengaluru. Beginning her career as an engineer, she worked on different satellite systems, software design, and trajectory execution. In about 20 years, her technical expertise and performance in complex operational tasks enabled her to assume important technical and mission-directing roles within ISRO.

What Was Ritu Karidhal’s Role In Mangalyaan?

Mars orbiter mission of India, also known as MOM, was carried out in November 2013. It is a mission that was meant to test the technology involved in interplanetary spacecraft and to study the surface of Mars.

Deputy Operations Director of the mission was Ritu Karidhal. She was in charge of the design and implementation of the spacecraft's autonomy system. This computer program helped the satellite to be independent millions of miles away from Earth, to find technical errors and fix them on its own.

Mangalyaan made India the first country in the world to make it to the Mars orbit on its first try, all at an extremely reduced cost compared to usual space exploration missions.

Why Is Ritu Karidhal Called The ‘Rocket Woman Of India’?

The name 'Rocket Woman of India' is a media and popular term coined for Dr Karidhal along with many other female scientists of ISRO. This title recognises her prominent role in difficult missions related to rockets and satellites, which are regarded as being traditionally masculine, and her efforts towards publicising India’s success in space.
