Major Radhika Sen Honoured By UN
Major Radhika Sen, a revered Indian Army Officer, has made the nation proud as she gears up to become the second Indian to receive the 2023 Military Gender Advocate of the Year Award by the UN. She served in the United Nations Organisation Stabilisation Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) between March 2023 and April 2024 as the MONUSCO’s Engagement Platoon Commander for the Indian Rapid Deployment Battalion (INDRDB).
The UN honourary award is to salute her for her advocacy for girls and women’s rights in the Democratic Republic of Congo during her peacekeeping mission while protecting them from sexual assaults.

Before Major Sen, Indian Army Officer Major Suman Gawani was honoured for her service as a UN Peacekeeper in South Sudan in 2019.
Who is Major Radhika Sen?
Hailing from Himachal Pradesh, Major Radhika Sen initially planned to build a career in Biotechnology. However, midway through her Master’s from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay, she chose to join the Indian Army eight years ago.
According to the UN, during her peacekeeping mission in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Major Sen organised English classes for children and health and skill-based training for adults.
