The Women Vocational Training Programme (WVTP), launched in 1977, was designed to integrate women into economic activities. This initiative, developed with the support of the Swedish International Development Authority (SIDA) and the International Labour Organisation (ILO), focuses on identifying and implementing vocational trades suited to women. The WVTP fosters vocational training for women, targeting wage-employment in industries, training instructors, and encouraging self-employment.

The programme includes:

  • Industrial skill training through the Craftsmen Training Scheme (CTS)
  • Instructor skill training under the Craft Instructors Training Scheme (CITS)
  • Short-term courses based on market demand
  • Specialised programmes for training ITI instructors

Women’s Vocational Training Programme By Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship

The Women’s Vocational Training Programme, originally launched in 1977 by the Directorate General of Employment and Training (DGE&T) under the Ministry of Labour & Employment, is now part of the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship. This programme aims to enhance women's employment in the organised sector by increasing their participation in skill training, which includes the Craftsmen Training Scheme, Advanced Skill Training Scheme, and Apprenticeship Training Scheme. Additionally, it provides advanced skill training for instructors at various skill training organisations. To support these goals, women-exclusive institutes have been established under both Central Sector and Centrally Sponsored Schemes.

YKK India’s Social Development and Vocational Training Center

Established in 2007 within YKK India's factory, the Social Development and Vocational Training Center aims to empower underprivileged young women by equipping them with essential knowledge, skills, and self-confidence. The training programme includes stitching, embroidery, basic computer skills, and English language instruction. Each year, 15 women from local villages are selected for a one-year training course. Upon completion, participants receive sewing machines to practise their skills and potentially create items for sale, providing them with additional income opportunities. To date, the center has trained 182 women, some of whom have gone on to join YKK India as staff members after graduation.
