In response to writer Chetan Bhagat’s recent comment on actor Urfi Javed calling her a “distraction” for the youth of India, the latter slammed him on Sunday through her social media. “I don’t understand one thing, what was the need to mention my name at a literature festival, I’m not even an author, mera koi lena dena nahi (I have nothing to do with it),” she said on her Instagram story.
Recently, Bhagat was invited to be a part of a literary event called Sahitya Aaj Tak where he commented on Javed’s choice of clothing. He said, “Phone has been a great distraction for the youth, especially the boys, spending hours just watching Instagram reels. Everyone knows who Urfi Javed is.” He also added that many boys see her pictures while they are in bed.

“Ek India ka jawan wo hai jo Kargil pe baith ke desh ki raksha kar raha hai. Ek humara youth hai jo bistaron mein ghus ke Urfi Javed ki photos dekh rha hain (on one side Indian army is sitting at Kargil to protect our country and on the other side our youth is tucked in their beds watching Urfi Javed’s pictures),” he said.

In her Instagram story responding to Bhagat’s comment, Javed said, “Also you said meri wajah se youth kharab ho raha hai, chup chup ke log mere post dekhte hai. Chalo aap toh bade ho, youth chodho aap toh mere uncle ke umar ke ho, baap ki umar ke ho, aap shaadi-shuda hone ke bawajudh apne se aadhi umar ke ladkiyo ko kyu message kar rahe thhe? Tab kuch kharab nahi ho raha tha aapka? Na aapki shaadi kharab ho rahi thi, na aapke bache kharab ho rahe thhe yeh sab harkatein karke.”
“(Also you said the youth is getting destroyed because of me and people look at my posts secretly. But your are a grown up, leve the youth you are my uncle’s age, my father’s age and despite being married you text girls who are half your age. Is nothing going wrong or bad at that time- neither your marriage nor your children after the things you were doing.)”

Javed referred to the sexual harassment allegations against Bhagat that came out in the wake of the #MeToo movement a few years back. Following Bhagat’s comment, she also shared some leaked WhatsApp chats that had appeared online during the movement and his apology over the screenshots. She also wrote a note on the same slamming the writer for encouraging rape culture and criticising women’s decisions. “Stop promoting rape culture you sickos out there! Blaming a women’s clothes for the behaviour of men is so 80’s mr @chetanbhagat. Who was distracting you when you msged girls half of your age? Always blame the opposite gender, never accept your own shortcomings or faults! People like you are misguiding the youth not me. Encouraging men to put the blame on the women or her clothing when they are at fault,” she wrote.
