I have studied at an Army school so we used to have huge celebrations on Independence Day. Despite being a national holiday, we had to come to school at 8 in the morning for flag hoisting, do our march past, sing the national anthem and were then served refreshments. The most exciting thing on that day was that we got free at 11 am and then we would go to a restaurant to enjoy some delicious snacks by each person contributing in the money they had.

In my view, Independence Day is a day that reflects the fact that we, as human beings, have the right to be free and live in a democracy. We have our rights and we should know them because if you don’t know your rights as a citizen, it can be tough. This day also brings a moment that enlightens you to work towards the betterment of your country and yourself too. To my fans, I would say just enjoy this holiday and spend time with your family.

The word ‘Raksha’ in Raksha Bandhan represents the beautiful bond and a promise between a brother and his sister to protect one another. It’s a celebration and a vow to be there for each other. I believe, my brother, Abhishek, is also an incarnation of my father. I vividly remember the times when we were kids and our entire family would gather at my Dadaji’s house and it used to be a grand celebration where all the sisters would form a line to tie their colorful rakhis to their brothers. It was an occasion I eagerly waited for as it was the day where all the cousins would huddle up and look forward to the gifts they would receive.

My brother once even pulled a prank on me where he pretended that he couldn’t buy a gift for me on Raksha Bandhan. I was really upset as that is one of the most important days of the year for me. Later, he surprised me by gifting me a gorgeous handbag. Times have changed and with my hectic shoot schedule, as much as I want to recreate our childhood memories, it hasn’t been easy. Abhishek Bhaiya, my sister, Priyanka, and I make it a point to go out and spend time on this day. Priyanka and I are the closest and for my brother, I am his go-to person whenever he wants to share his thoughts. This Raksha Bandhan, I only look forward to make some time for my brother and sister, so that we all go out and have a blast.

Raksha Bandhan holds a really sentimental value in my life. My sister, Shraddha and I never need a reason to fight and our relationship is completely similar to Tom and Jerry. It is almost customary that we end up fighting right before this day but we always resolve our fight before the ceremony.

We have a tradition that we follow where my mother cooks delicious and an elaborate meal while my sister takes it upon herself to prepare the sweets. I make sure to buy her something that she would cherish and this year will not be any different. I have always been inclined towards art and it fills me with joy and pride that my sister also decided to pursue the same field. She is an art teacher and I am really proud of her. Now that I’m a part of the television industry and my schedule is really uncertain, I look at her and she reminds me of the days when I used to paint. She is a phenomenal artist and she inspires me.

My job may be demanding but we will make it a point to celebrate. She is my little sister and it’s a day I promise to protect my sister and celebrate the beautiful bond we share. I believe siblings are God’s gift to you, your forever friend and your protector. So all the brothers and sisters out there, make your siblings feel special and always keep supporting and loving one another.

Celebrating Independence Day during my childhood always meant that I give a patriotic speech on one platform or the other. My mother was very adamant to evoke that one emotion of ‘Desh Bhakti’ in me during my growing up years. She would write wonderful and factual speeches for me to learn, understand and deliver.

I remember an incident from my childhood. When I was 5yrs of age and had delivered the first patriotic speech my mother treated me by taking me to a big garden to play. Unfortunately, I fell and broke my right hand and was under plaster for nearly 2 months. I was so embarrassed to go to school the next day with plaster after my super hit performance the day before. My mother then said, “All the great leaders of our nation who strived for this Independence Day, were mostly in plasters every time they delivered a good patriotic speech!” I haven’t forgotten this.

My message to all the fans is that Nation love includes having responsible citizen behavior and everyone should strive towards it.

We used to celebrate Independence Day when I was in school and it used to be huge. I was in a convent school and Father of the school used to come and hoist the flag. Later, students would dance, sing, perform on patriotic songs and teachers would perform as well. The celebration would then end with some delicious refreshments and sweets and this was the part that we were most excited for.

I would get goosebumps every time we celebrated Independence Day by hoisting the flag and singing National anthem. The feeling of ‘We are all one’, that no caste, creed or colour could divide us, always shook me. I just have one piece of advice for all my fans this Independence day that, get freedom from your negativity. Just be free and let others be free too.

Krishna Bharadwaj (Rama in Sony SAB’s Tenali Rama)kishna bhardwaj

Independence Day is a reminder that the freedom we have today is because of the sacrifices that are involved in it and it gives me a lot of pride to be an Indian. When we were young, this day meant listening to inspiring and moving speeches and performing a special dance/ act in school. We would get excited as we would especially dress up, wearing white clothes and take flowers to school especially to put under the flag pole. I really miss those days.

It’s a really important day in the lives of every Indian and we take pride in our country. It shouldn’t be only these patriotic festivals that evoke the patriotism in us but every day of our lives should be an attempt to make our country and its freedom fighters proud.
