Why do we light 14 diyas on Choti Diwali?

Choti Diwali, also known as Narak Chaturdashi, is not just the night before Diwali. It is the night for protection. In this evening, families light 14 diyas, one for each of the 14 lokas (realms) and for the 14 generations of ancestors. But the most important rule is this: Out of 14, one diya MUST face South. That is the Yama Deepam, and getting it wrong defeats the whole purpose.

This year, Choti Diwali evening falls on Friday, 7 November 2026. Chaturdashi Tithi begins at 10:47 AM on 7 November and ends at 11:27 AM on 8 November. Yama Deepdaan is done in Pradosh Kaal - 5:31 PM to 8:09 PM on 7 November.

Why 14 Diyas On Choti Diwali?

The number 14 is not random. The 14 Lokas symbolise the victory of light over darkness across all 14 realms of existence. Choti Diwali also celebrates the Narakasura Vadh. The day when Lord Krishna and Satyabhama's victory over the demon Narakasura, who had captured 16,000 women. Another reason behind is to protection from Alakshmi: Lighting diyas drives away Alakshmi - poverty, discord, and negativity and prepares the home for Goddess Lakshmi's arrival on Diwali. In Bengal, it is Bhoot Chaturdashi, where 14 diyas are lit for 14 generations of ancestors.

The South-Facing Diya Angle: Why One Lamp MUST Face South

This is the most important diya of the night, and it's called Yama Deepam / Yam Deepdaan.

South is the direction of Lord Yama, the God of Death, as per the Garuda Purana and Vastu Shastra. On every other day, we never light a diya facing South. On Choti Diwali, we do it intentionally.

Why Is It Placed In The South Direction?

To appease Yama and pray for protection from untimely death, accidents, sudden illness, and negative energies. It is also lit for the peace of ancestral souls.

How to light it correctly:

  1. Use an old earthen diya, not a new one
  2. Fill it with mustard oil, not ghee
  3. Use a 4-wick (char-mukhi) diya if possible - it represents the four directions
  4. Light it after sunset in Pradosh Kaal
  5. Place it outside the main door, on the right side, or near a drain / outside the house boundary, with the flame/mouth facing South

Remember: Do not bring this diya back inside the house. Let it burn out on its own. Pray: "Yamraj, please protect my family from akal mrityu and give long life and good health to all."

Common mistake: Many people place all 14 diyas inside the house facing East or North. The Yama Deepam must be outside and facing South. If you light only one diya, let it be this one.

Where To Place Each Of The 14 Diyas - Complete List

Here is the traditional placement followed in most North Indian homes:

1. Outside Main Door, Facing South - Yama Deepam

For Lord Yama. Protection from untimely death. Mustard oil, 4-wick.

2. Main Entrance / Dehleez

To welcome Goddess Lakshmi and prosperity. Place on the left side, facing East.

3. Puja Room / Mandir

In front of Lakshmi-Ganesha idols. For divine blessings. Use ghee diya here.

4. Tulsi Plant

For Goddess Vrinda and domestic harmony. Light after offering water to Tulsi.

5. Kitchen - Near Stove / Annapurna Sthan

For Goddess Annapurna, food and nourishment. Never let kitchen stay dark on Choti Diwali.

6. Near Water Storage / Matka / Filter

To honour ancestors and Pitra Devta. Water is considered sacred for ancestors.

7. Bedroom - South-West Corner

For peace, good sleep and removal of negativity from the house.

8. Near Peepal / Banyan Tree Or Temple

If there is a tree or temple nearby, place one diya there for Trimurti - Brahma, Vishnu, Mahesh.

9. Courtyard / Aangan

To illuminate the centre of the home and remove darkness from the heart of the house.

10. Terrace / Balcony

To send light upwards, symbolising that light should reach all 14 lokas.

11. Window Sills

To show warmth to passers-by and to ensure no corner of the house is dark.

12. Staircase

For safe energy flow between floors and to remove fear of darkness.

13. Study Table / Work Desk

For knowledge, focus and success in work and studies.

14. Washroom Entrance / Near Dustbin Area (Outside)

To clear negative energies and Alakshmi from impure areas. Place it outside, not inside the washroom.

Short on time? At least light 5 diyas - South-facing Yama Deepam, Main Entrance, Puja Room, Tulsi, and Kitchen. Never skip the South one.

What Not To Do With The South-Facing Diya

  • Do not use ghee for Yama Deepam. Use mustard oil only.
  • Do not place it inside the puja room.
  • Do not place it facing North or East.
  • Do not reuse the same diya the next day for Lakshmi Puja. Discard it the next morning.
  • Do not let children touch it. It is placed outside for a reason.

Conclusion

On Choti Diwali, the 14 diyas are not just decoration - they are protection, prayer, and preparation. Light 13 for prosperity inside, but never forget the one outside facing South. That single Yama Deepam keeps your home, family, and ancestors safe.
