Thanksgiving Day 2023: History

Thanksgiving day is an American holiday that has many legends and rituals that are attached to its name. It is deeply rooted in American history, cultural traditions and the faith of its people.

As per the American beliefs thanksgiving is celebrated after the harvest feast of 1621 shared by the British colonisers of Plymouth, Massachusetts who later came to be known as the ‘Pilgrims’ and the ‘Native American Wampanoag’ people.

This festival was first observed in the manner of a feast that brought together the two peoples in celebration of having survived. This was acknowledged as the first Thanksgiving. For the following two centuris, many individual colonies and states celebrated this festival on various occasions.

But it was not until 1863, during the American civil war that President Abraham Lincoln declared a national Thanksgiving Day that was to be held each year in the month of November.

The holiday was annually celebrated and proclaimed by each US President, thereafter. However, in a joint resolution of Congress in 1941, Franklin D Roosevelt issued a proclamation in 1942 that designated the fourth Thursday of November as Thanksgiving Day.
