In a landmark move, Thailand has taken a significant step towards promoting equality and inclusivity by becoming the first nation in Southeast Asia to legalise same-sex marriage. As per the Wall Street Journal, the country's Senate approved the groundbreaking bill on Tuesday, paving the way for Thailand to join the ranks of Taiwan and Nepal as the third place in Asia to allow same-sex marriages.

While Thailand has long been known for its bustling gay bars and prominent transgender community, making it a mecca for LGBTQIA+ tourists, local same-sex couples were unable to legally marry until now. The passage of this bill marks a significant milestone in the country's journey towards greater acceptance and inclusivity.

According to the Wall Street Journal, despite Thailand's reputation for acceptance, the country has struggled for decades to pass a marriage equality law. Thai society largely holds conservative values, and members of the LGBTQIA+ community have faced discrimination in their everyday lives. Additionally, the government and state agencies have historically taken a conservative stance, making it challenging for advocates of gender equality to push for change.

The marriage equality bill, which grants full legal, financial, and medical rights to marriage partners of any gender, sailed through the House of Representatives in April with an overwhelming majority. On Tuesday, it passed its final reading in the Senate with the approval of 130 out of 152 members in attendance. The bill now awaits the formal endorsement of King Maha Vajiralongkorn and publication in the Government Gazette, after which it will become effective within 120 days.

The government, confident of the bill's passage, announced plans to host a celebration at Government House, decorated with rainbow carpets, flags, and a giant balloon in the shape of two hands making a heart sign. Supporters marched from Parliament to Government House to join the festivities, marking a momentous occasion for the LGBTQIA+ community and allies.
